One Night in Paris - Marais or Latin Quarter?

We have a twenty-four hour stopover in Paris, arriving at noon Saturday and leving the next morning. In what part of the city would you recommend staying? We liked walking through the Marais our last time there, but are concerned that many shops etc. will be closed. We stayed in the 6th several years ago, so want to try something new. Any great hotel recommendations? Thanks.

Very few things will be closed on Saturday in the Marais, except some of the more observant Jewish Orthodox places, of which precious few remain in that part of town.

Someone just asked a similar question a couple of days ago. My suggestion was split the difference between Left Bank and Right Bank..and stay on Ile St Louis.

Small island, one main street with nice shops and restaurants, easy walk to Notre Dame, St Chapelle and Metro, fairly quiet at night. Lot of good scenery around this locations. The Seine river ruise (Vedettes du Pont Neuf) is a 20 min walk.

It is also a 15 min walk to the RER station that goes directly to the
airport.

One thing you will be asked...what is your budget for hotels? It is hard to recommend without knowing this. For Ile St Louis, the Lutece, Deux-Iles, and St Louis hotels are three names.

Thanks for the help so far - we are trying to stay below $250 for the night.

If you decide to stay on the Ile St. Louis the Hotel Saint Louis would fit your budget. It's a basic hotel, but the staff are very welcoming and accomodating. The Lutece and Deux Iles are good too, but more expensive though, and staff are okay not as good as at Saint Louis to me.

I stayed in the Marais for a month and really enjoyed it... the Carnavalet and shopping areas are lovely. But this time I'm switching to the 5th for its energy, nightlife, affordable shops and fantastic foreign foods.

Don't get carried away, people. The OP is only in Paris for 24 hours, several hours of which must be spent coming from the airport and going back there for check-in. And probably some sleeping as well.
