One night in Amsterdam: where to eat?
 

I know this game is the most fun to play when envisioning an unlimited budget...sadly that's not my situation, but feel free to try and tempt me. I might note I will be alone, so no famously romantic restaurants please! I am a student on a serious budget (with some room to splurge for the right occasion) so I am fine eating at a street stand if it's the best meal to be had. I'll eat any cuisine too - Indonesian, Dutch, whatever. Thanks fodies!

I would go to the Pancake Bakery. We visted friends who were living in Amsterdam for a year, and this was one of their favorite places...it became one of ours. Not expensive, very Dutch. I thought it was a great atmosphere.
Indonesian feasts are fun and delicious, but are best when you have a crowd.

Even though there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from in Amsterdam, everytime we are there we end up eating Chinese!

Our favorite restaurant is Nam Kee, located at Zeedijk 111, just down from the Waag, in the little section of Chinatown. My favorite dish, so far, is Tappen Noodles with Chicken and Vegetables (BTW, Happy New Year!). Husband and I usually eat for €20,00 or less. There is nothing fancy about the place, but the food is good, and lots of it.

Thanks so much for the replies so far! That Chowhound post was great, though it's a little discouraging that after all that research people responded "if you're looking to have good food in Amsterdam you're going to be disappointed"!

It just occurred to me that my one night will be on a Sunday...I gather that might limit my choices but I still want to have a great meal! This hasn't prompted the flurry of responses that I'd hoped for so may I add that it's my last opportunity for a gourmet meal for a while...I'm going to be interning in Malawi working with refugees all summer!

Le Zinc has really great food with reasonable prices. We enjoyed it as well as der blonde hollander. Zinc is more continental and the hollander is pure dutch.
