One day stop-over. Heidelberg or Strasbourg?

We fly into Frankfurt in November and rent a car. We would like to stay close by (but away from FRA) for couple nights and rest a little, before the rest of our driving vacation thru Switzerland and Austria.
So, we're looking for a town just few hours away, with a little bit to do and to see. I know November is not kind to tourists, but we will have to take it.
We've never been to France, is Strausbourg a little "gem"?
Is Heidelberg too touristy? Visited there 20 years ago, remember it fondly.
Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

Strasbourg = Close to a gem (not so little)
Heidelberg = Meh

Between the two of them an easy call, IMO.

Strasbourg is a sizable town that is charming - but not very French - seems much more German due to it's background and toing/froing. We loved it - but it took 2.5 days to see even quite a few things there.

Heidelberg is about an hour from Frankfurt, Strasbourg about two and a half hours. If you're driving directly from the airport, I'd recommend staying in Heidelberg, at least for the first night. Then you can continue on to Strasbourg for the next two.

Thank you everyone. I'm still torn! I will shop around for a nice place with on-site parking and see who wins. It's only couple nights, but would love to make the time memorable.

Freiburg is another possibility.

Freiburg? Good idea. We are driving toward Liechtenstein, so I tried not to get too far with my plans, I will consider it though, it is not too far.
Thank you.

If you are headed to Liechtenstein, then Strasbourg and Freiburg are taking you quite a ways west of target. How far do you want to drive that first day.

Tubingen is the same distance as Strasbourg and Freiburg, and different.

You could then continue down the Neckar Valley (it is November, however) and stop at Meersburg and Lindau on your way too Liechtenstein.

Aramis, I think you hit a bulls eye.
We have around 10 days before we return the car in Berlin, and only 2 must-sees. Liechtenstein (just because) and Kirchschlag (south of Vienna, childhood memories). Rest is "free time".

Oh, I wish I could hire you to do the rest of the itinerary... If you know any other little town on a way, please let us know.
