One day on Capri...what to see & do

With only an excursion day to Capri from a cruise ship, what would be the best things to try to see & do with this short amount of time on the island?

Hi tp,

If you enter "capri" in the search box you will find several trip reports with much info on Capri.

tpatricco, walk down to the end of the pier, and to the left you will see all the hydrofoils that go to Capri. Buy a round trip ticket and enjoy.

When we got to Capri, we were going to take the funicular up to the top of the mountain to the main town. This was my 3rd time to Capri. Instead, we took one of those convertible cabs waiting where we docked for a tour of the Island. It was great fun -- took us around to places I could never have gone by myself (maybe if I took the bus) for great pictures, to the Blue Grotto, and dropped us off at a great restaurant where we had a superb lunch away from the touristy areas. Then drove us to a little shop where we bought some trinkets, some nice sweat shirts, and a few bottles of wine to take back aboard the ship.

For all day, it cost us $25 per person for the 4 of us. I normally don't do those types of tours, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. ((b))

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll certainly search for other threads on Capri. I've been there once, but needed some jog to my memories. My in-laws will be there in a few weeks and asked for some suggestions. I thought the group could enhance their experience more than my thoughts alone!

If you are interested in going into the Blue Grotto I would suggest doing that the moment you get onto Capri. The later in the day you go the longer it takes. I went at 8:30am last August and was back at Marina Grande within an hour.

The convertable cabs are indeed fun to take a ride in. And not very expensive either. If you get to Anacapri take the chairlift. You get a great view of the island from there.

If you end up walking around and doing a little shopping be sure and go to Carthusia. They have their perfume factory on Viale Matteotti. They are quite historic.

Villa San Michele is interesting to visit. And walking down to the end of Via Tragara for a great view of the Faraglioni.

Thanks Kelly. I am specifically sending my inlaws to anacapri to the perfumeries to get me some stuff I'm almost out of. They are in their early 60's and my MIL doesn't swim, so they have sadly eliminated the Blue Grotto.

Ira - I checked the threads with disappointing results. I did, however enjoy reading your trip report from Oct '03. If I wasn't going to St. John for two weeks in May, I'd be trying to convince my husband to go to Italy. I guess that'll be our next trip. I've been enjoying all the posts so much, can't wait to go back myself!

Anybody else have some Capri suggestions? Pablo Neruda's monument? What's there that I've forgotten?

Thanks to all! Trish
