One day itinerary in Biarritz, on Sunday
 

I'll be staying in Biarritz for two nights in early September. Arriving in the evening, so really have one full day to explore the area.

We'll have a car and the following day we'll be driving towards LaGuardia stopping by in Saint Jean Pied De Port, and possibly in 1-2 French Basque villages.

The full day in Biarritz will be Sunday so I understand most stores and museums will be closed. Should we perhaps just relax and for example take a walk on the Biarritz promenade? Should we visit Bayonne in the afternoon? Perhaps there is a nice park or nature preserve in the area?
Would like to get some praised food items in Bayonne, like ham and chocolates but not sure whether the stores will be open on Sunday.
Any recommendations are welcome.

Museums should be open on Sunday. Most of the shops in the area are in Bayonne - not Biarritz. Do don't go to Bayonne for shopping. We walked through Bayonne after shops were closed for the evening and again several times during lunch closing - and the place was quite dead. We didn't look for any shopping in Biarritz - we just wandered around, enjoyed the setting, walked the promenade, sat in a park and had a wonderful half-day there. Maybe tgo to St Jean de Luz & walk along the boardwalk in the afternoon - or a scenic drive in the countryside.

I would just do a good wander-around. It's a pretty place. Bayonne, from my experience, will be fairly dead. I agree that St-Jean-de-Luz is always a treat, and things (a few) were open on a Sunday when we were last there at the end of September.

If you like walking, here are some options.

First take some time in and around les Halles in the morning, with some tapas before the walk.
Either you go North. After the cliff, you will always be on a footpath by the sea till the river Adour (maybe 2 to 3 miles). Up there, there is à small nature preserve (2 ponds with migrating birds). If you have enough, you catch a bus back to Biarritz. If not, you can explore the Chiberta pine forest.

Or you can go south. At low tide, you can walk on the beach till Bidart, take a bus back to Biarritz, or go further south on the sentier du littoral (signs) till the border if you wish to! But you will likely get a bus back after Guéthary (nice Basque village)

good idea to visit St-Jean-de-Luz instead of Bayonne for half day, it seems more lively.

thank you, looks like there is plenty of scenic walking paths in Biarritz and around it. We'd love to walk, perhaps before noon.

I'm going to check museum schedules, I believe basque museum in Bayonne is closed on Sunday, that would be one reason to stop by in Bayonne.

The Asian museum in Biarritz is worth a look.
