One Day in Venice

Due to travel constraints, I have only one full day to devote to Venice. Is there something I must do (site, concert, restaurant, gelato) or will I be fine just walking around and exploring Venice? Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Take the public boats up and or down the Grande Canale - to me about the most dreamy thing you can do in Europe, let along Venice

And do it at night as well as the day - then the eerily subtly illuminated old palazzo silently slip by - serenly standing sentinel to a era long gone.

And also listen to the various quartets playing in front of outdoor cafes in St Mark's square.

otherwise just explore and get off the beaten track - easy to do to savor a very different Venice that most of the day-tripping bus tourists do - stick to the oft elbow-elbow gauntlet from the parking lots/train station to San marco

I love Venice and I could spent a lifetime there, but I think that if all you have is one day, it can be a great day!

I personally think the one must see sight is Piazza San Marco after dark. And I think that the St. Mark's Basilica is one of the most beautiful churches out there, particularly if you like mosiacs.

Other than that, with such limited time, I would skip all the other museums and what not and spend my time wandering the streets, trying to get away from the main tourist drags. I agree with Bob's recommendation of the grand canal boats - they offer gorgeous views.

Have a fun trip!

Hi J,

>Due to travel constraints, I have only one full day to devote to Venice. <

That's too bad.

When are you going?

What's the rest of the itinerary?

You might want to skip Venice this trip.

I'm assuming you're flying out of Venice?

Anyway, you'll have 2 wonderful nights to enjoy Venice, which I think is the best time to see Venice, for all the darn day tourists are gone, and you get to see Venice in all its glory. At least for me.

I'd say first night, go to St. Mark's Square and stroll. The Venice Biennale will still be up, so walk around the art.

I love walking the Rialto at night, and walking along the canal where ever I can.

Enjoy.

Hi J,

You will have 2 evenings. Good.

With the exception of taking a ride on a vaporetto along the grand canal at dusk, I suggest that you just wander around and enjoy the town.

Have you looked up Venice under "Destinations".
