One Day in Venice.

What would you do if you had one full day in Venice?

I have a friend going to Venice in a few days and will have just one day there. I suggested the following to her:

From the train station, take the #1 Vaporetto boat to P. San Marco. It’s the “slow boat” and you’ll have a nice ride down the Grande Canal. Visit the Duomo, go to the top of the Campinelli (sp) and take the Secret tour (if you can get in) of the Doges Palace – if not take the regular tour. Visit the Rialto bridge area, the market nearby and pick up lunch at San Bartolomeo’s. Wander around and get lost! In the afternoon head to Bruano or Murano, depending on your preference. Find a nice place for dinner (I have some suggestions – see my travel page at http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/home.html)
PS: I told her that since she only has one day that if it’s a gorgeous day, then stay outdoors to enjoy the city. There is the Academia museum and other museums to see, but I’d rather be wandering around Venice and enjoying the many wonderful sights.

Unlike Monica, on a one-day visit I would skip the other lagoon islands. I'd spend some time walking around Cannaregio and/or Dorsoduro, two interesting neighborhoods with great churches, cafes, and museums if you want them. And don't forget to have an overpriced drink, coffee, or gelato in one of the cafes right on Saint Mark's Square, corny music and all. You'll always remember the time you spend there.
See also www.veniceword.com for another suggested one-day visit.

Elaine is right, have lunch or at least a drink listenting to the dueling orchestras at San Marco. The tower view is great too.Just walking the streets is terrific. One night we ate at the Pizza parlor outdoors by the accademia bridge. It was great on a beautiful night just to watch all the gondolas and traffic go by.
Elaine, I totally agree about not heading to any other island, but my friend stated she wanted to visit another island. Personally, I wish she had at least 3 days for Venice!
