One day in Prague
 

We have one full day in Prague (2 nights) on June 18th. We are easy going travellers (30 years old) and will be staying at the Perla Hotel. One suggestion made to us was to go to the town square and spend the afternoon down there wandering around. Are there any other must see areas that we wouldn't have to travel too far too?
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Across the river is the castle complex - which IHO is a must see.

If you are just going to stay near the Old Town Square definitely visit (and climb) the town hall. this is great for picking up tours - we did a fascinating 1.5 hour architectural walking tour of the old town - and getting info on the plethora of concerts and musical events they have every night. Old town is esp wonderful since it is one o f the very few sizable cities that have original architecture - since Chamberlain handed Czech over to Hitler to try to prevent WWII (ha! - one of the great stupidities of all time) it is one of the very few major cities not bombed to smithereens by either side. (The Berlin you see is all reconstructed since 1945 - when it looked like rubble strewn parking lot.)

Also if going up the hill to the castle is too much (but there is a tram that takes you right to the castle gates) have a look at the buildings in the Jewish quarter - right next to Old Town - which are incredibly moving end evocative - and demonstrate how before the war Prague was probably the most diverse city in Europe.

definitely do that, walk across the charles bridge so you can see the river, and go up and see the castle if you have time! its a must in prague!

I did not find the Castle that great... the city center is small,
easily walkable and very beautiful.

Better get up very early as there are lots of things to see in Prague!

In addition to the Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Jewish Ghetto, Old Town Square and all it offers (St. Nicholas Church, Astromical Clock, Our Lady Before Tyn, etc., etc., etc.), there is:

Strahov Monestary Library
Loreta Church
Vysehrad
Beer Gardens/Brewerys
Petrin Tower
Municipal House
Fred and Ginger Dancing House

and the list goes on and on and on. Then there are the day trips outside of Prague!

Lots to see. Sorry to hear you only have 1 day/2 nights.

I spend 5 nights there and it wasn't long enough. Loved it!

I guess wandering around the Old Town Square,seeing the sights

then crossing Charles Bridge , going up to The Prague Castle

and touring inside both the Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral should occupy your full day.

Definitely need to walk across the Charles Bridge. The area around the Castle is interesting because you will recognize it from several action movies. Strahov Monastery Library is very impressive...we liked it better than the famous Melk Abbey. And you can't beat the view of the city from behind the monastery. If you are into photography, definitely pay the fee to take pictures at the Loreta Church.

We were surprised to see so many young tourists in Prague....not the usual 50-60s crowds. We enjoyed an excellent Italian meal near the square...can't remember the name of the restaurant but can get it if you are interested.

If you go to the castle complex you might want to duck into the "Golden Lane". Kafka lived there for a short while.

The city is a great place for wandering around and where you are staying is not far from the heart of things.Make sure you get out at night and have a wandr in the dark, Old town Square and the Charles Bridge are just lovely after dark
