One day in Paris what should I do?!?

I have one day to spend in Paris and am not sure what is worth seeing and what will be a waste of time. I for sure what to see the Moulin Rouge. I enjoy history and art as well. Can anyone suggest anything and perhaps a way to get around? Also, I know some French will it be helpful to use what I know when there? Thanks!

Hi,
The Moulin Rouge is one of my lesser priorities.
You can visit Montmartre, the Marais, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Tuilleries, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysee, Musee D'Orsay, Cluny, St Germaine, Luxembourg Gardens, St Sulpice, Napoleon's Tomb, etc, etc, etc...
You will probably find that speaking French will be of some assistance.

Your question is that you know some French and wonder if you should use it?
I say no.

With only one day, I would recommend the hop on-hop off city tour. You will get an overview of the city's main sights and can get off when you see something that interests you. If it is a nice day, definitely go to the Tuileries, one of the most beautiful city parks anywhere.

Definitely use your French if you know some, otherwise why did you go to all that effort to learn. Even if you do not understand the response, people appreciate that you make the effort. Too often I have heard in Europe how Americans are not interested in learning any languages, they expect everyone to know English.

How about protest Frances fraudulent involvement in the UN. Why make exchanges for oil with a country you have agreed to mandate and restrict production of said weapons. That should keep you busy.

Thanks for your help guys - sorry JCE - i'm on the french side of the war arguement here. As the world seems to be wrapped up in US unilateralism I just want a nice escape - maybe i won't have to hear about war in France...

Here's another recommendation for L'Opentour (the hop on/hop off bus, see www.ratp.fr for info and routes), especially if the weather is nice. The views from the open air upper deck are magnificent (great photo ops, too) and stops are at all the major tourist sights and attractions, including Moulin Rouge (do you just want to "see" it or attend a show?).

As for knowing some French, get a copy of Barron's "French At A Glance". It has all the useful phrases, phoenic pronunciations, along with lots of other necessary information.

With only one day, you'll have to determine what is most appealing to you. I can't think of anything not worth seeing or a waste of time.

Best bet is to decide ahead of time or en route where you'd like to "hop off" L'Opentour and explore.

Take the English tour of the Louvre. You get to all the big famous stuff with some easily understood explanation in a relatively short time.
