One day in Napoli Italy

Our cruise ship will be in the port o
in Naples in July for one day. I was told to leave Naples and go to Sorrento or Capri. The cruise ship has expensive shore excursions to these places. I would rather do it on our own. Is it possible to take boat from our Naples port to Sorrento for a few House and then a boat from Sorrento to Capri for a few hours then back to Napoli’s port in one day? We arrive at 7am and leave at 730 pm. How easy is it to get from the Naples port to the hydrofoils and then once in Sorrento and Capri how do we get around. Are the towns walking distances from the ports? I don’t think I plan on doing the Blue Gratto due to how crowded it is in the summer time. Just really want to see the beautiful towns
And such.

Unless there is something specific in Sorrento that you want to see, I would plan on spending the day on Capri (or Ischia). Trying to reach both Sorrento and Capri in the time you have may be physically possible, but you would spend half of your time on boats (with multiple risks of delays) with little left for sightseeing. You need to plan to be back in Naples well before 7:30p to allow for any problems you may encounter.

If you take the cruise excursion, they would be responsible for getting you back to the ship on time. If you make your own plans, the risks are all on you. You might want to compare the cost of the excursion to what you would spend if you DIY.

I second all that Jean has said and will add that I very much enjoyed my 3 night stay in Naples, a city of tremendous depth and riches. As a solo female traveler, I was cautious and felt safe in the historical center during the day. For more details, https://www.fodors.com/community/eur...-rome-1066671/.

Thanks you for your response. Good advice! We are now planning maybe a small private boating tour around Capri and a few hours on Capri. Sound like enough for one day.

We made a deal with a private small boat owner who gave us a boat tour around Capri. It cost a little more but some of the other boat tours are really packed like sardines. This way you can get up close to those famous rock formations. We opted to see a couple of smaller grottos on the way around rather than negotiate the long lines at the famous blue grotto.

Also, make sure you visit Anacapri, the other town on the island. It’s a bit less crazy than Capri. There is a chair lift that does up to Monte Solaro. The views from there across the Amalfi coast are about the best anywhere.
