One Day in Munich

Hi,

We are flying into Munich next week and are traveling onwards to Vienna, Prague and Budapest from there. We arrive in Munich from the US in the afternoon and spend the following two days there before traveling onwards on day 4. We know we will be tired from our travels and will be resting the day we arrive, Day 1. We are planning on visiting Neuschwanstein Castle on Day 3 which will take the whole day so really just have our second day to explore Munich.

Any suggestions on must visit places in Munich during our short one day visit?

Thanks!

Marienplatz, Town Hall/Clock, Cathedral, Residenz (in city palace) and if you move fast head out to Nymphenburg which has gorgeous grounds but can easily take 3 to 4 hours to explore.

For a laid back day in the altestadt you could start at the Marienplatz, walk by the Viktualeinmarkt (depending on the day), go up to the top of the Frauenkirche, then a walk through the Englisher Garten with a stop at any of the beergardens. We were there on a Saturday and there was a band playing in the pagoda in the Chinese beer garden. There is surfing at one end of the Englisher Garten and we even stopped to watch a cricket match.

There'a a lot of information in the new National Socialism (Nazi) Documentation Centre recounting the seminal importance of Munich in the rise of Hitler.

A day group pass for the city rail/tram system is less than 12 euros, since you are pressed for time.

I like the Munich Walks tour called "Hitler's Munich". It's a little over 2 hours and gives a good walk around the center. Our tour guide also touched on WWI.

Don't miss the Englisher Garten or the Viktualienmarkt (food stalls near the Marienplatz).

Get the Bavarian Lander Ticket for your trip to Fuessen and back - about 30 euros for a couple notp.p. and can take unlimited regional trains the whole day and S- and U-bahns and trams and buses in Munich for the whole day. Way cheaper than walk-up fares - get the pass in Munich train stations. Check www.bahn.de/en for scheudles and ordinary fares.

For what it's worth, four of the most boring things I saw in Munich, and I would even say Europe, are (no kidding) Marienplatz, Town Hall/Clock, Cathedral and the Residenz. I heartily recommend searching the internet for Munich's top attractions and seeing if any of them grab your interest. I happend to be quite interested in several of Munich's museums of art, so that kept me quite occupied.

But if you prefer to walk and poke around, there are interesting markets and gardens, but also if there is one utterly unique church to visit it is the Asam church. It's easily reached from the Marienplatz on foot and takes no more than a few minutes to see, but it is a marvel.

I would book a tour with Dark History Tours. Get the most memorable experience possible with the short amount of time you have in Munich. Have gone on 3 different tours with them the past 2 years and it has always been money well spent. Read their reviews on Trip Advisor too.

I am with Sandra on Munich's major sites. Although the city is one of the most livable I have visited and has a phenomenal transit system, the often quoted "major sites" are underwhelming. And the similar feeling Munich has to an American city is pretty obvious-- nothing wrong with that, it just makes it less exotic. I wish we had had time on our visit to see some of the several museums. The Nazi museum was definitely the highlight for us over the other major central sites.
