one day free

May have a day and a half lay over. First day (full) would be upon arrival from states. Any suggestions for us?

xxx Mar 19th, 2002 02:52 PM

This is fun. We get to pick where your layover is? Or do you know, and we are just supposed to guess?

xxx Mar 19th, 2002 02:56 PM

Assuming you're trip is to Europe and not the western half (since there is a layover). That means you're probably going to Italy, Greece or somewhere beyond.

That also means you're probably in London, Paris, Madrid or possibly Zurich (probably not).

Someone else take over from here.
Rex Mar 19th, 2002 02:58 PM

He omitted to say the Netherlands.

Another case of a newcomer who doesn't realize what Fodors fails to explain. Clicking on a country is invisible to most of us who only look at this forum as all of Europe.

Best wishes,

Rex
You missed out Reykjavik and Amsterdam. KLM is more likely but the airfares on Icelandair are fabulous

Rex Mar 19th, 2002 03:03 PM

Huh? What's this about Reykjavik? He didn't "click on" Iceland.

The question is about a day and a half in the Netherlands, presumably Amsterdam.
xxx Mar 19th, 2002 03:06 PM

OK, Rex, we know you're smart, but mind telling us how you figured out he's talking about the Netherlands?

Rex Mar 19th, 2002 03:09 PM

I clicked on ("selected") Netherlands, and it popped up.

I also tried Belgium first, just as a guess.
Sheila Mar 19th, 2002 03:10 PM

Could we go for humour, Rex, just for once, please? huh? pretty please?

I posted at the same time as you so didn't see yor post till mine was up. I waskidding. I knew the original had done what you said; but still, it was funny. For a while:(

Rex Mar 19th, 2002 03:13 PM

Oh, sorry. Wasn't meant to be a jab, Sheila.

A fan of yours here.

Or is that "too clubby" a thing to say?
Dick Mar 19th, 2002 03:20 PM

Gee--gimme a break. Long day but at least I got a whole bunch of responses. Thanks. Amsterdam is the city.

top Mar 19th, 2002 09:18 PM

It was already a long day for you at 6:50 pm? hope tomorrow brings you some rest, and some actual answers.

Maybe re-post and try starting all over.
Rex Mar 20th, 2002 06:18 AM

Okay - - since no one else has jumped in here with any actual information.

See the "Netherlands websites" thread. Way too much to describe about Amsterdam to put here.

Alternative suggestion, if you have itchy feet and need to escape the city (or have been there many times before)

Edam - - 30 minutes away; charming quaint; might just barely fill 24-36 hours.

Maastricht - - actually further away than many places in Belgium (Closer to Brussels than it is to Amsterdam) - - buit also well worth the visit.

And slightly onward, Aachen or Cologne.

Alternatively, for a lovely overnight getaway - - also in Germany but different direction, on the Arnhem-Duisburg autobahn - - Parkhotel Wasserburg-Anholt. A castle hotel with a real moat, complete with swans and every visual fantasy notion you ever had about spending a night in a castle. Highly recommended.
