One-day car rental from Amsterdam

We are having difficulty trying to rent a small van for 24 hours in Amsterdam. Six of us want to go to the Kroller Muller museum and then to the gardens at de Wierse, a little further away.

We are checking all possibilities, but I am surprised that we are being told we can only get a 12 hour rental, (or I guess double the price) - but that the car rental place (Hertz) at Amsterdam Centraal Station closes at 2 PM (on May 9!)

Can anyone shed light on this?? I gather we can go out to the airport to get the van, but that would mean at least one bus and one train. Thanks.

Why not just take the train? It's an easy journey.

Well, we also want to go a little farther, to the gardens at de Wierse in Vorden.

How easy is the train? We are staying 15 min. Northeast of Amsterdam in Broek in Waterland.

Thank you for your help.

The museum website says for public transport take a train part of the way and then bus or shared taxi service.

I would look at airport car rentals. They should have more choices.

I found the trains very easy to navigate in the Netherlands.

Enjoy, lucky you. I'd go back to the KM in a heartbeat.

May is the perfect time to go, I believe, they have some very old rhododendrons that look like they will be towering above your head. Take photos and post please! We went in Oct and miss the rhododendrons

We are looking at all the options, thanks. DH and I have been to Kroller Muller twice, the others never. But we really want to go back. It is an amazing place. Check it out.

Look at renting from Schiphol - it is often cheaper to rent from there, and you have more options for returning.
May 9th is a public holiday (Pinksteren/Whitsun)in the Netherlands, which is why the office is shut early. You won't have that problem at Schiphol.

Assuming you want the car on May 9... you can pick up the car at the station as you likely want to leave in the morning. You can almost always drop a car off even if an office is closed... most will have a drop box for keys. Take photos of the vehicle upon return if this is the case and keep a copy of the gas fill up receipt from a gas station close by. Just in case.

Or pick up the car at the station, drop off your party at the end of the day and one or 2 of you make the car drop out at the airport so not everyone needs to train back to your accommodation.

Hetismij: Thanks for that info. We couldn't figure out why the early closing! You have solved the puzzle!!

ParisAmsterdam: Yes, that too is a possibility, one of my fellow travelers is exploring it.

Palenque: My Dutch friend mentioned that agency last evening when we spoke. We will look at it too.

Oops! May 9th is of course Ascension Day not Whitsun - that is May 20th.

I hope you find somewhere to hire a car. I can quite understand wanting to with 6 of you. Have fun!

Many people will have the Thursday and Friday off, and will make it a long weekend. Veluwe and Kroller Moller could be busy. Well worth a visit though, and if you have a car, maybe also Palace het Loo?

I was disappointed to find out my National Museum Card was not valid at the Kroller-Muller even though it was at its sister museum the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam!

I took the train to Ede-Weningen (sp?) and got on buses outside the station that took me to Kroller-Muller - then I took the bus to Arnhem to return to Amsterdam via a different town.

The Museum card is valid at the K-M. You have still have to pay €8.40 entry to the park though. Otherwise it costs €16.80.
K-M is not a sister museum of the van Gogh. Completely separate affairs.

I got no discount three years ago with my museum card and I asked the ticket office why not - they said no coverage - perhaps like adding Anne Frank House this has all changed?

Thanks everyone. We have found a Dutch van rental out in the countryside near our B &B, which will rent for much less than the "biggies." got good direction from this forum, plus our innkeeper and our Dutch friend.

We keave next week!
