On the job front... (Beth A)
hello all

just popping in. I will reply to emails this weekend I hope, so if you emailed me, sorry, I will reply.

I have been running around like a head with its chicken cut off - met 20 people in 4 days! My 'day off' was making additional phone calls - most people I have met have made suggestions for further contacts - some as many as ten more! before too long I think I will have met a representative of each law firm here. (seems that way anyway).

anyway, I just called to extend my tickets an additional 2 weeks. absolutely had to - too many people to meet. a few recruiters have leads for me (yay!) and I was invited to a few receptions/seminars/events (one each actually!) so I should meet many more folks that way too.

run run run. meet meet meet. that's my life these past few months... will be a time I look back on fondly, I hope so anyway...

more later, gotta run & get ready to go out with friends...

Beth

Go girl. M.
|
Hi Beth. A serious question: how on earth do you manage to keep all of these people/contacts/companies straight? Sounds like doing the Louvre in two hours on a golf cart..."and this is the famous, but that was the lesser known blah blah, and remember his other work in the other wing on another floor?
|
Is anyone else curious as to what Beth looks like? Or is it just me? I'm not a pervert, just curious.., as I picture someone who when she is dressed up can handle anything thrown at her, but can get completely turned around in her own closet.
|
I just picture Beth with a big smile on her pretty face all the time!
|
I accidently saw a picture of her once, and she looks like a beautiful blonde
babe, and as you can see, she is always in a good mood, it amazes me!
|
How do you accidentally see a picture of someone?
|
She has pictures out in cyberspace - on a couple of Fodorite's websites. She's blonde, she does have a big smile on her face in the pictures, she appears tall in some of the pictures, and she's pretty. But more importantly, she seems like a genuinely nice person.

I'll see if I can't locate an address.

Anywho, Thanks Beth for getting back to us on the job search. We're all pulling for you!! Now you'll need to write a book on how to successfully job hunt on the international front. Big Woo Hoo for Beth! : )
|
Here's the URL for the Fodorites website managed by Sally Fowler (great job S.Fowler!)-just scroll down til you see "Beth A in Southern France": http://geocities.com/dhfsbf/fodorite/pictures.htm

Plus, there are some pictures of Beth (and other Fodorites if you're curious) on Monica's wesite (great website Monica):
http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/fodoritescorner.html

And there you go!! : )
|
Why don't you all go to a chat room and spare the rest of us! (I know, I know, I don't have to read it!)
|
I met Beth for dinner last night, we met first time on her last UK visit.

She is blonde, with elfin face enhanced by elfin haircut, big eyes, smiley face.

Looks good in dress and jeans..

Lovely girl!!

We stuffed our faces on Thai Malaysian food at Silk and Spice up in Chalk Farm...

YUM!
|
Beth: If you have answered this already, I apologize: Where are you licensed to practice and how have you, or are you going to, become licensed to practice law in the UK? Is there some kind of reciprocation? That in itself would seem to me to be a big hurdle. Thanks for the info.

Hey, Beth,
You go, girl! You can't help but succeed, as you're giving it 125%! Fingers are crossed for you.
ja

finally got back to a cyber cafe - lots to catch up on...

went to Bath y'day - just so anyone who is interested, knows: if you go to Paddington last minute, it is 31 pounds return. The Jane Austen tour guide in Bath told us that with 5 days advance purchase, from Waterloo, it is 14 return. good to know...

The Roman Baths are impressive - can't imagine going there without visiting them. Looking at a bit of the steps, still in their original spot, with a piccie next to them to show you how the temple must have looked, sent tingles down my spine.

I would like to go back in the summer when the leaves/flowers are out... as well as some sun. it didn't rain, it was just grey...

anyway, trying to answer questions, bear with me as I will likely jump around a bit:

Rob Daddy: how do I keep them all straight? memory, and a notebook for numbers and names of folks I was further referred to. that's about it. (I agree though, it is one hell of a lot of running around). I did decide to give each person their own page in a notebook with any info I received from them on that page. I carry a teeny one with me for notes during the day & put the notes in the neater, bigger one each evening. (I am probably a secretary's nightmare, or anyone who has actual organizational skills).

anyone who thinks I am even moderately pretty must need their sight corrected even more than I do... but then again you don't have to see me with frightening bed head or anything... (and no I am not tall - 5'4").

and I am not *always* in a good mood (just usually), I just keep things to myself more than many people? maybe. (there's a conundrum - an extrovert who keeps things to herself. how's that work anyway.)

bad moods never stick around v. long anyway. also you have to be a pretty good friend to really hear me bitch about things. (or family). or just be unlucky enough to be around me when I am genuinely pissed off. which is rare anyway so there you go. why waste the energy getting mad & sadness is fleeting. (yes, I have lived a blessed life to have little to be sad about - anything I am sad about I figure is of my own making so I just soldier on & forget about it).

curious: licensed in VA, toying with doing so in DC (never needed it but was told it's good to have, for over here, as well as NY). you don't need to be licensed here, depending on what you do. in fact I was told by a few people, Americans and Brits included, it may be a liability, as US trained lawyers here tend to make a lot more than UK trained lawyers (I know, it doesn't seem fair but there you go).

the bigger hurdle appears to be getting the work permit - I can't do it for myself, I have to convince a company to hire me/want me more than anyone who already has the right to work here. the competition is tough given the state of the market, there are so many talented telecom folks out there and if someone with my quals already is living here & has the right to do so, they are that much ahead of me...

it's all a bit like dating isn't it?

anyway, if you can stand it, more later, have to research a company I will interview with tomorrow.

later, gators!

Beth

It may be different if you are working for an American firm in this country but according to the Law Society.

"Applications under Regulations 6,10 &11 of the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Regulations
In order to transfer to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales barristers qualified in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, Lawyers qualified in overseas jurisdictions are normally required to pass certain papers of the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test and to meet a two year experience requirement. The experience requirement may be waived/reduced where it is the normal practise for a trainee to complete two years in 'articles' as a part of the training scheme in an overseas jurisdiction.

When submitting an application to transfer, applicants should provide evidence of any experience which they wish to have taken into account, by way of a letter from their pupil master, head of chambers, or employer. Details of the dates of employment, together with nature of duties undertaken and areas of law in which experience has been gained should be included therein. Please note that the following types of post-Call/admission experience may be counted.

up to 12 months pupillage certified as satisfactory by the pupil master;
any period spent in practice at the Bar (i.e. tenancy or squatting);
any period spent in legal employment in the office of a solicitor or lawyer in private practice;
any period spent in legal employment with the Crown Prosecution Service or with the Magistrates' Court Service; and
any period spent in legal employment in the Civil Service, Local Government, a public authority, commerce or industry provided that the employment is in a legal department which is headed by a solicitor, barrister or lawyer of at least 5 years standing;
The above experience will count provided that, in the case of barristers qualified in England and Wales, such employment is in England and Wales or is of such a kind as would count as good service under articles, and, in the case of barristers qualified in Northern Ireland, such employment is in either England and Wales or Northern Ireland.

Experience gained overseas may count if this has been gained in a common law jurisdiction and evidence of this is provided. In all cases the experience in question should have been gained in the last five years.

Should a request be made for any experience to be taken into account which does not fall into any of the above categories, e.g. experience undertaken in another jurisdiction, then it is likely that the application would have to be referred to the Transfer Casework Committee for their consideration."

Yes, but she's not coming to work as a solicitor and thus does not need to enroll

Gee,Lawyer, it is a good thing you wrote this...to think that Beth is over there all this time and meeting all these people and doesn't know anything!

I am sure Beth knows exactly what she is doing!

Hi all,

more insights and tips, I hope...

still plugging away at it. I sent out a resume on a tip from a gentleman I met, and got an immediate response - so I am meeting a recruiter today. I also have a reception to go to, a really lovely couple, a British Barrister and his American wife (who is know not only an American lawyer but fully qualified English solicitor) seem to have taken me under their wing and I am going to a law society reception as their guest.

on to the tips:

check this site out

www.busygirl.co.uk

it seems to be pretty good, have not had time to thoroughly check it out though. I believe it has won some awards for women-entrepreneur-type websites, and it appears to have links to various clubs, associations, etc, for networking.

which leads to this tip - try to find out about as many associations, clubs, etc as you can. these are great places to network.

Also, as my trip here is now becoming a month, the extra time is proving to be vital. I was here for only 2 weeks last time (November), and this trip was to be 3 wks (with one week in Scotland) and I am here to tell you - in two weeks, you are only getting warmed up.

You will be referred on to many many other folks, and if you don't have enough time to meet these contacts (some of which appear to be bearing some sort of fruit) then what was the point of making the whole journey... so give yourself as much time as you can! (plus it is less nutty when you are not trying to meet 5 people in a day...)

one note - I think I have mostly caught up with my emails... if you have emailed me and don't hear from me, NAG ME! I will reply... one thing you quickly figure out - not working is as much work as working, if you are going about the job searching correctly that is...

take care all!

Beth

Hi all,

yet another installment. I went to a very posh club last night, the Carlton Club, for a reception, as the guests of a very nice couple I met last week.

I met a lot of people there, as well as running into a number of folks I had already met - small world I suppose. I met some more Barristers who have invited me round their offices to see how that part of the legal puzzle fits in to the rest of it.

I'm heading out to an interview in a few hours too..

Kavey, if you should happen to read this - looks like I will be able to meet you and Linda & Glenda after all. I didn't have any specific meetings materialize for dinner time, today.

Beth
|
Beth, Linda
See you tonight :)

Kavey

It's wonderful how many Fodorites I am meeting this year!
