I personally enjoy reading about various trips and experiences - and I would hope when I post reports about my trips that it helps someone in someway.
And Santa Chiara - you brought a smile to my face - thanks!!

Sandi--- Trip reports are actually travel advice from first-hand experience. It doesn't get better than that for a posting topic. In all honesty, I found your postings more annoying than any of the number of trip reports thar are posted on a daily basis.

Trip reports are fine, and yes, it's very exciting to be back and relate every last minute detail of your trip here on this forum. Often times your friends, family and co-workers are not travelers and are more interested in their SUVs than in your trip, so it IS fun to relate it here among fellow travelers.

That said, I agree somewhat with Sandi. Blow-by-blow minutia in a four part series is tiresome, and perhaps a little abusive of Fodor's generosity. No one needs or wants to know what you did every waking moment of every day. If you are unable to edit yourself, why not do what so many others have done and create your own travel adventures web site? Then you can chatter on to your heart's content using your own web space.

But if you do so, please don't use Fodor's to announce updates to your web site every five minutes. That is just as tiresome as the four part trip reports. Offer a mailing list on your site for your visitors and just e-mail them with updates.

I love the trip reports; too bad they are all so well-written. That makes me envious on *two* levels. Damn your eyes, you wretched creatures!

I think ron made a good suggestion. If you want to write a detailed travelogue, do so on your own web site. Not only can you post your miniseries without cluttering up this forum, but hey, if you haven't ever designed a web site before, now's your chance. HTML is easy to learn and you'll have a new skill.

Trip reports are the best and it is easy to avoid reading them if you do not care for them. Brian's recent France post helped me relive my own trip- I enjoy the details. They are 100% different than the annoying "just trying to stir things up" posts like this one! I don't think we need more "guidelines".

This forum has been so helpful and amusing for me, I wouldn't dare to critize the trip report element. Trip reports: I'm with the love 'em, love 'em, love 'em brigade. And details are good.

P.S. When I get back from next trip I'm gonna' pin you down and make you listen to every unique discovery of my virtual slide show.

P.S.S.- If I'm not mistaken, I believe Elvira will soon be cruising down the Naviglio Brenta to gaze upon the villas. I'm looking forward to getting out my Michelin guide to follow that trip report.

Fiirst of all, please note I am not the same Sandi who posted the original message. I don't know of too many other Sandi's spelled with the "i". I love this forum, almost everything about it. I don't care for the negativism at times, it takes away from the good feelings many share here, but if I don't like something, I just ignore it. The trip reports here are the next best thing (often times better) to going to your local library or book store and checking out the latest travel magazine or guide.

I love trip reports. It’s a great way to gather information, learn about new places to visit that I may not have thought of or didn’t think it would be worth visiting, and provides current information on sights, hotels, transportation, restaurants and so on. I have written 3 trip reports (on my travel page) and although I think I’m a lousy writer and probably put some people to sleep, I get nice compliments and thanks of appreciation for writing them.

Were it not for trip reports, classics such as, "And Take Your Geese With You" would not exist. It would be a distinctly sadder world.

Trip reports are great and although this thread has negative implications it actually is very positive. The reports provide us with more ideas and cautions. As said, if you do not like them, do not read them!
What is really positive is that if anyone wonders if their trip reports were read, including myself, and worth the time in posting, this certainly answers the question! (even if they did not get asked many questions, it does provide assistance and the yeahs far out weight the nays). Go Trip Reports!

Details! I LOVE the details! The useful tips and recommendations one can pick up are just amazing. Anyone who does not appreciate the time and effort the author spends sharing details can just scroll on past. I, personally, find the original topic here an "abuse" of this forum.

Funny, that's what all the people who would like very much to continue advertising here say -- "If you don't like it, don't read it!" Shades of MauiHeidi. Guess you could say the same about anything else here, including the ethnic slurs and pornographic language that pop up occassionally. But no one just ignores it now, do they? Oh no, we all have our opinions and never hesitate to express them.

Sandi's point is that everyone's little multi-part docudramas here clutter the forum and push down a variety of different topics so you have to search for something that was on the front page just hours before. Instead, the entire front page is filled with "My Trip to Italy, Part 43!!!" Not the end of the world, but a slight irritation. And a bit arrogant on the part of the long-winded writers, who don't even grasp the fact that Fodor's is trying to edit and contain these verbose postings by LIMITING the space!

I know some of you out there may not want to face this, but not everyone is interested in the detailed recap of your vacation. Reminds me of some "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy and Ricky are convinced that everyone is just as enamoured of their child as they are, so they subject their friends to constant home movies and nonstop details of Little Ricky's activities. *YAWN* Same goes for the four part travelogues.

FOR! FOR! FOR!

I love the blow by blow reports. Here's an idea. If you don't enjoy them - don't read them. Just like pro wrestling - turn the channel!

Thaaank You "Please Spare us" for a little support. Seems if you have a different opinion here, you can count on getting "scalded". It will not deter me from expressing my opinion, and NO, I am not a 15 year old boy. My opinions are sound, even if they differ. I do not enjoy scrolling and scrolling past chapter 22 of someone's trip to "England". That should be saved for some other forum. This forum is for exchanging opinion and advice. Limited review of an experience or trip has value, but I am talking about the ones that divide and divide in attempts to thwart Fodors from limiting the length of any one post.

Geeesshhh! Here's the same advice I give my father who doesn't like carrots in his soup:
If you don't like it, eat around it.

Sandi,
I suggest you take a look at the travel lounge home page. This forum is designed for more than "sharing opinion and advice" as you so narrowly define its purpose. Fodor claims it is designed to offer an opportunity to ask questions, get advice, share stories and for travelers to talk with travelers. To my mind, the forum does just that. In the same way that we can deliberately avoid a boorish individual in a social setting if we so choose, we can avoid topics here in the forum by simply ignoring them. As guests of the forum, it is not our role to criticize or fault the contributions of others in the same way that we should not disparage persons' opinions with which we disagree if we meet the persons in a social setting. Nor should we criticize our host for the guests he invites.
