On-liine method to pay traffic fine for Italy?
We visited Italy in May of this year and our last few days were spent in Rome. When returning the rental car we had to drive thru a ZTL zone to get to the rental agency and garage. I was aware we'd done so and also aware that given our hotel was in the ZTL zone, either the rental agency or garage could call in the car tag number and have it removed from the "white list".
Suffice it to say between the language barrier with the garage attendant and me ... he just kept repeating, "no ZTL, no ZTL, no ZTL" like a broken record; the closed Hertz office and zero assistance from our hotel ... I knew I would get the ticket. And yes ones may have had the good fortune for their hotel to assist with this type issue ... but the hotel we stayed in would not lift a finger to do hardly anything, especially in this regard.
My question is simply can someone point me to an on-line method to pay for the ticket? I've received a "Verbale" notification from Hertz and have no idea how to go about paying it. There are no links, no mailing address, etc. I've also spent a few hours googling this and trying to find an on-line method to resolve - with no success. One link points to an EMO service which directs ones to, "please use the username and password indicated on the fine sent to you on behalf of the competent Administration". To which I see no such username or password on the Verbale received.

Wish I could help. I wasn't even aware there is something called a "white list." I simply got a ticket from the local Italian governmental agency and paid it on line. Sorry I'm not as up on this sort of thing as you seem to be and good luck.

If you got an notification from Hertz, that isn't the actual ticket. The actual ticket will arrive later, sometime months later. Hertz has your credit card number, and will bill you separately for their "assistance", which means passing your information to the police.
It depends on the city, but in general hotels can't do anything after the fact, and I'm not sure car rental agencies can do anything ever. You have to give your license plate number to the hotel before you arrive, and tell them where you're arriving from (by car) and where you're taking the car when you leave. They can get you permission to take the car to the hotel to unload and park, and to take it back to where you're returning it on your last day. Usually you have to follow a prescribed route.
Anyway, by the time you'd passed through the ZTL, it was probably too late to do anything about it.

You can't pay in advance of receiving the ticket. The Hertz notification is simply the charge on your credit card for supplying your contact information to the police. The option to pay the ticket online will come when you receive the actual ticket. It can take up to a year. The ticket comes with an account number and a PIN number. You need both of those numbers to login to the ticket paying website. Without them, you don't get access.

Hertz has already charged me for their 'administrative' fee and also sent me a pdf image of the ticket. This image includes the ticket number, date for the 'offense', location, et al. I see nothing on it which indicates an acct number and PIN.

The pdf is only proof of transaction. It may also become available for download after you get your account number and PIN. After you login to your account, they offer several pdfs for you to download, including the photo of the car if a camera captured it.
I don't think the numbers on your pdf ticket have any relationship to the login information they will send you. You may need a lot of patience. I got my car rental notice within 2 months of being in Italy. The ticket didn't arrive until over a year later.

I've received a "Verbale" notification from Hertz
As the others said -- all you've received so far is the notification from Hertz. Nothing you can do AFAIK until you receive the official notice. It won't be from Hertz.

OK - I'll wait. Thanks for your good comments too, as it seems other have had similar experience.
I will say that we were warned about car rental in Italy - especially in the bigger cities. And the car was rented purely upon the insistence of one person. Given the trip, I'd never rent a car for where we went as the train, bus and taxi services got us mostly anywhere we wanted to go; they were faster and required no hassle either.

I did not like the way my infraction was handled. I will never rent a car in Italy again.
The camera captured my car in a ZTL in June 2015. I was there, no doubt about it. I received a letter from my car rental agency, dated August 2015, informing me of their "transmission" of my information to police and the charge to my credit card according to their contract. The charge appeared on my bank statement August 6, 2015.
In March 2016, I received a certified letter informing me that a "fine has been imposed." I called the contact number on the letter and they told me the actual "violation" letter would be forthcoming. I could then pay online or submit an appeal.
The certified "violation" letter showed up on September 2016, well over a year after the infraction. However, in the letter I noticed the date they call "date of ascertainment." They had it listed as 15 Sept 2015, which made so sense to me since my letter from the car rental agency was dated August 2015.
I had the sense my "date of ascertainment" was fudged to fit within their statute of limitations.
I don't speak any Italian. I had no reasonable way to investigate this or contest it. I paid the 115 Euro fine online.

In our case we drove in and out of Florence several times without difficulty. We got the actual ticket for driving somewhere in Siena and that is the city I was being really careful in, too.
I usually take trains in Italy but I would rent a car again if it were the best way to get places.

Do I take that the "one person" was someone to whom you could not say no? Someone who pitches all the benefits, but has nothing to do with when things go wrong?
I think a benefit of this thread, in addition to paying logistic of the ZTL fine payment itself, from this incidence is how one handles traveling with someone like described. I have traveled with a group. When I had someone like this, when I mention, "You want it, you take the risk, you pay for it", they have so far backed down. It does work with my siblings, however.

If a car is the best way of getting where you need to go, of course, you should drive. I'm driving to Rome in two weeks, but not into the city. The closest I'll get to the city is the GRA (ring road).
We once spent a week in Tuscany, staying in Montalcino and Lucca. We drove on that trip, because a car in invaluable in rural Tuscany. While we were in Montalcino, we wanted to go to Siena for the day, but when we found out there was a bus from Montalcino whose schedule suited us, we took the bus.

How MANY times have we seen posts from people asking if they should pay one of these fines? There obviously IS an alternative. The problem was, for me, thinking I had been careful not to break any laws or drive into a forbidden zone and yet I received the citation.
It leaves a bad taste when you honestly think you haven't broken any laws and there's that suspicion that the whole thing is some sort of scam.
