Olive Oil Tasting or Oleotecas in Rome

We'd like to do olive oil tasting while we are in Rome this April. Can you suggest good places for doing this? Are there any Oleotecas in Rome?

We thought of taking a side trip to Sabina, but would like to stay in Rome as much as possible, so if there are good places to taste and buy olive oils in Rome, we'd rather do that.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions along these lines.

-Bill

I have no definitive answer for you. Last time I was in Rome I was interested in buyins a few olive oils and visited the well-known enoteca of Anacleto Bleve, on Via del Teatro Valle. The oils he recommended to me, however, were Umbrian rather than from Sabina. (I brought home a few bottles and they were excellent) Along with a wonderful array of wine, Bleve does have a range of oils and is very knowledgeable. But I am not sure if you can taste there...They do serve lunch several days a week.

Vopetti in Testaccio might be good for an oil tasting. Also, the Via Flaminia north of Pza del Popolo is strung with food shops..you could try there but as I said, I have no definitive answers. Please report back if you find a good place for sampling, or if you do the Sabina oil route...

Thank you ekscrunchy. I'm going to e-mail the owner of the apartment we are renting and see if she can point me the right direction as well.

We were already planning on visiting Volpetti. I might contact them too.

Anyone else?

This establishment on Via Giulia calls itself "the first Roman oleoteca":

I'm not sure you can taste here either, since they say they organize tastings one Thursday a month.

I also wonder whether most olive oils would not be past their prime tasting time by April..

Thanks Eloise. As it happens Apicus is a short walk from our apartment, so it will be easy to visit and check out. I'm going to send them an inquiry and see what they say about tastings, etc.

Dear Bill,
I can suggest you the national oleoteca opened in Rome since last September. They have olive oil corners in the old town near Navona square and if you contact them first a professional taster will support you and your friends on tasting and choosing.
