I finally saw the video with her climbing up the hill followed by her decision to take the route straight up Everest as the other way (with the 5 camps) was too time-consuming. No need to let her body acclimate to altitude changes, not for her, no siree!

The best bit from the Bahrain interview "Like her idol George Mallory, who died while trying to reach the summit, Mary has decided to dispense with Sherpas."
And if she looks closely enough she may just be able to find her idol up there.

When I saw her dragging her doggie during their daily walk I was howling!

Faux, I think you will be happy to know that Mr. Connolly SCOFFS at my disbelief countering with "but LOOK at that website!"

Carol, thank you for the best laugh I've had all day.

Beatchick,

You must listen to your husband! Of course they are real.

I hope the Leslie to whom Cigalechanta refers is not the Leslie whose surname begins with an S of whom I have heard a report from someone once? Non, c'est pas moi! Nyet! Nein! I am Faux in the truest sense of the word.

The countdown has ended, but the website hasn't changed otherwise. I wonder what's next. I hope she keeps up the site.

cmt,

This link gave me such a good laugh that I've been checking it every day since you first posted.

Today - all is revealed and it turns out to be a clever advertising campaign.

Well, I hope you are happy with your ill-earned advertising bribes, Mary and Daisy, YOU killed Tinkerbell!

I'm sorry that 'Mary and Daisy' were just part of an ad campaign. The nerve!

ad campaign not withstanding, I still think it is very funny.

Fans of Mary and Daisy can see two new movies with audition clips and out-takes.

Oh - and check the credits -

Mary Woodbridge is played by Sheila Latimer and Daisy is played by.......

Mr Ben...

Tinkerbell is dead. Sadder words were never spoken.

Well, Faux, it may interest you to know that Mr. Connollys says his hopes are dashed, nay CRUSHED. He really *did* believe. He promises never to be believe ANYTHING on the internet AGAIN. (huff)

I think this is one of the cleverest marketing campaigns I've ever seen - it ranks up there with The Blair Witch Project.

If it's an ad campaign, what are they selling? I don't see any sign of it on the site. (Of course I was sure that this 85-year-old woman and her dog were not going to climb Everest! )

Hi WillTravel, go to the link - there's a huge red warning sign to the right, underneath it says Campaign Story. There is the whole kit & kaboodle. In short, it's an ad campaign for that yellow slicker Mary is wearing - clever!! Basically, this is a classic "watch this space" ad but done with a twist. I love it!

Thanks for the tips! It's much easier to see the Warning ad if you use Netscape, rather than Internet Explorer.

I don't understand why you think the whole thing is an ad campaign just because an ad appears on the site(and doesn't appear very well--I wouldn't have noticed it squeezed into the far right and mostly hidden if there hadn't been all this talk about it). Lots of sites are funded by ads. My guess is Mary, and maybe her techie grandson, are just having fun with the site and the attention they're getting, but they're not above accepting an ad to cover the expense of the site and give them some income. I looked up a UK website registry site and found that the website is registered to a "Mary Woodbridge." So maybe in the new movie about filming this movie--which I don't really understand and find less funny than the original two movies--Mary is playing an actress pretending to play Mary.

Carol, if you click on the ad it says that the whole thing was an ad campaign for the yellow slicker.

Now, at home, I see it. But at work all I could see was a tiny sliver of the first page of the ad--very strange. I still think it's odd that the domain was registered to a Mary Woodbridge in Nov. 2005, with Nov. 2007 renewal date. Mammut paid fpr this game all these months and only now showed its face? Odd. See: orders.net2.co.uk/order/domains/whois_info.pl?domain=mary-woodbridge.co.uk I still think she was a lot of fun, whether she was a grandma amusing herself or an actress being paid to star in some nutty ad campaign.

URL didn't come out clickable, but it should work if you copy and paste the whole thing.
