Oktoberfest in Munich
 

We will be in Munich Sept 22-24 for Oktoberfast. My wife and I would like to know
Which is the best Beer garden to visit that will be closest to our hotel. We are staying at the holiday inn express messe. Also does
anyone know where or what MESSE is or means?

There are breweries in Munich, but if you're there for Oktoberfest the real atmosphere is to be found at the fest itself. catch the U-Bahn to Theresienweisse and follow the crowds! You'll find more beerhalls than you can shake a stick at, and they're all jumping! I visited the Lowenbrau one, but that's only because the friends i was meeting were there. They're all good.

Messe means exhibition centre - in this context, possibly the fest itself?

Messe is the German word for fairground. This is the former airport Riem, now used as fairground. This is not the old fairground next to the Oktoberfest! Actually your hotel is in Feldkirchen, about 12 km east of Munich.

12km is kinda far from the action but we
Only paid 87.50 EURO per night the other
3 star hotels wanted 140 EURO per night
for thses dates.

There is a train station in Feldkirchen. The S-Bahn takes you to Hackerbrücke in 23 minutes. From Hackerbrücke to the Oktoberfest it is a 10 minutes walk.

Bigboy - keep in mind that unless you have secured reservations for a table (mainly through Munich businesses, law firms, relatives, and the like) you will most likely be standing in any of the tents if you arrive past 5 PM - all the tables will be reserved/occupied. Do walk through as many of the 8 or so Halls that you can - each one has its own "flavor" of patron and unique decorations. I loved the giant animatronic lion in front of the Lowenbrau tent! I do not, however, recommend going on the roller coasters after four mosses of beer. It won't be pretty. Have a great time! And have one of those brilliant huge pretzels for me!

I don't know any beer gardens out by the Messe, but with public transpo you'll be able reach any of the good ones.

The best beer garden in Munich is the WaldWirtschaft (WaWi), and you can get to this via s-bahn and a 10 min walk.

Other popular ones are Augustiner (north side of Hackerbrücke on Arnolfstraße), and the Seehaus and Chinese Tower--both in the English Garden.
