Oktoberfest and the Pope

I never post questions regarding travel here - but I'm interested in your take on this jolly little trip of mine.

Hubby and I planned to go to the Oktoberfest. (starts September 16 - October 3 2007) - but we plan to go just for one day.

Now the Pope has decided he's going to Mariazell in Austria (Sept 8th) and hubby would like to see him.

So we are planning to take our holidays around these two mindblowing events.

This is not a joke.

We will travel around Austria anyway - but can you think of something else incongruous I can throw in?

Well, at least you won't be bored!
Got your hotel in Munich yet?

When you go to the Oktoberfest, try to get a seat inside one of the many tents. You have to do this in advance - check out the Oktoberfest website and the links to the various tents and see if you can book something online. You will experience the real Oktoberfest inside the tents, evening is best. Probably too early now but check regularly as it is very difficult to get a place. Companies buy up tables far in advance. If you can't get one, then just try to get into a tent and stand around. Or go during lunch. You can probably get in then but it won't be the same as in the evening.

No we're all set for Oktoberfest - we're invited by a company so the seating is no problem.

I'm really just looking for fun ideas to add to the Pope-Oktoberfest dichotomy.

OK. how about adding Dachau so you can go full circle from the terrifying to the sublime back to the terrifying.

Grab a local nun and take her to both events.

Let's see, the Pope on the 8th, and 1st day of Oktoberfest the 16th. That gives you a little over a week to fool around.

How about 3 days in Vienna, then make your way West to Hallstadt, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, and Chiemsee then on to Munich.
