Going to Provence for 16 days on August 31. Fly to Zurich, only place I could use my Delta miles, and then taking train to Avignon.

Will spend 10 nights in Avignon, two in Beaune and three in Lyon, since we fly back from Lyon.

Have researched virtually every comment on the subject posted on this site and it has been very worthwhile.

Looking to enjoy the historic, the gastronomic and the Chateauneuf Du Pape. The mantra is one bottle for lunch and one for dinner. My wife and I have been planning this particular trip for almost two years.

Hope we will not be disappointed.

TBH

Leaving Friday for Italy with a friend -- three nights in Montalcino, three nights in Positano, three nights in Rome. We have each travelled a lot separately but have never travelled together before, so here's hoping our friendship is as good at the end of the trip as it is now (some of you Fodorites know what I'm talking about)! At lunch I went out and bought Michelin maps of central & southern Italy & heading home tonight to start my packing. I've learned so much on this forum about where we're going that I can't list it all!

My husband and I are leaving one week from today! Pretty excited...seems like we have been planning this adventure forever!
We are flying to Brussels, spending the weekend enjoying the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix at Spa. Hubby has dreamed of this for most of his adult life. Then on to Alsace region in France for five days, with a car. Taking night train from Paris to Milan, then renting a car. We are staying in a farmhouse near Montespertoli for a week, hopefully have enough time to see some of the beautiful places you all have inspired us with. After Tuscany,we go back to Milan for the weekend of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza (another dream of DH) afterwards we train it to Paris for our last week. Meeting up with our son and daughter-in-law and our eighteen month old granddaughter there.
Sorry I have rambled here, but you asked, and so few people really want to know ALL about THE TRIP.
Can't wait to hear the other postings to this thread.
Happy trails!!

Leaving Friday am for a near 3 week odyssey to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangkok...I know it's the Europe board, but I am just so excited!!!!

Everything I have learned pretty much falls under the category of "new and nifty," but any nearly-last-minute suggestions from itinerant Asia explorers are welcome!

We are leaving in two weeks, September 5th (does that qualify?). It is our VERY FIRST trip to Europe and ambitious: seven weeks, includes 4 days London, a day or two in Brittany, 5 days Paris, 4 days Barcelona, six days driving across the French Riviera, then Liguria, 4 days in Rome, 3 days in Naples, a few days in Greece , then about 5 days in Cairo.
We will celebrate one year of (first) marriage in Italy. We're in our forties, so all of this is very precious.
The trip will have an unusual bellydance slant. I'm promoting my costume books on the subject, so I have plans to meet other bellydancers in a number of cities. Cabaret shows, classes, schmoozing---ALWAYS a blast.
My husband and I knew almost nothing about travel outside the U.S. (Canada doesn't count, does it), but almost every question was answered on this board, from practical car rental and rail info, dress and behavior do's and don'ts, inspiration, and yes, what to do with a bidet. My anxiety has disappeared, leaving only excitement. Since I am a costume designer, my travel wardrobe includes a few items that Rick Steves would not approve of, but then again, I don't want to be photographed against the most spectacular scenery in the world, looking like Rick Steves. One of his minions at the Rick Steves travel place here in Seattle, hearing us discussing clothes packing, assured us that "it doesn't matter what you look like" since "you'll never see those people again". Even assuming that were true (and it may not be), why not be concerned about making a good impression? A thread about the unusually friendly reaction of locals to nicely dressed tourists vs the "typical" tourist (but let's not cook that topic again) made me think about what sort of experience I want while traveling. And what about the photos? Surely we'll be looking at those for the next 50 years. Call us vain, but attractive ones (both us and the setting) give us pleasure long after the event.
In my research, I learned about the (half) nudist town of Agde(?) on the Riviera. Now my husband wants to go there! He points out that thanks to our intensive health/exercise program, we won't offend any locals if we do appear among them. I'm undecided...
Anyway, thank you Fodorites for all your help!
Just be sure you wear comfortable shoes on the nude beach! Maybe black thongs?

In about 2 weeks:

A week in London area (business)
A week in Clifden, Ireland (hols)
A week in Dublin (Hols)
A couple of days in Munich during Octoberfest (business - or at least as much as I can manage when the entire city is partying)
A long-weekend in either Paris or Rome (hols: can't decide which, may be dependant upon cost and availability of hotel rooms)
A week in London area (business)

Then home for a much needed rest from an surfeit of good eating, massive book consumption, many late nights and excessive consumption of the grape while myself, my family and my business collegues sort out the problems of world.

I am exhausted even THINKING about it! Holidays should be banned so we can all focus on the really important thing in life - WORK!

Regards ... Ger

First, let me just say that I wish I had as much vacation as some of you! Very jealous! Well, I'm leaving for my first trip to Europe for Italy next week. Fodorites were very helpful in my planning -- Venice for 2 nights, Cinque Terre for 2 nights, Florence for 2 nights, Tuscany (Chianti region) for 2 nights. If anyone reads this and has any suggestions for anything, I'm all ears! Thanks for posting this!
