"Paris Blues" with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sidney Poitier, and Dianne Carrol, with a cameo performance by Louis Armstrong. This is an especially great movie for lovers of jazz music, but the Paris scenes will appeal to all. The movie was shown on Bravo or AMC a couple of months ago, so it will undoubtedly be shown again this year.<BR> <BR><BR>

Ladybug, I did see that movie a few years ago and loved it particularly since the Jazz Age in Paris fascinates me. Thanks for mentioning a great movie!

Besides a lot of the aforementioned movies. I think the movie with Meg Ryan called "French Kiss". It was cute. Partially set in Paris and on French Riviera. Romantic Comedy. Have a great trip!

Mary-I didn't notice but if noonementioned it, Queen Margo is also a good Paris atmosphere film, the Louvre when people were living in it!<BR>So when you are standing in the rooms of the Louvre, and look out a window into the courtyard, you can imagine the servants running around, waiting on those people... " ooh la~peel me another grape~"

MaryC Jan 18th, 2002 06:45 AM

Thanks, Katherine! Yes, French Kiss is a very cute movie. Lots of great scenes in the countryside, too.<BR><BR>And thank you, C! I don't think anyone's mentioned Queen Margo as I don't recall hearing about that one. Looks like I'll have to see that!! I never thought to look out the windows of the Louvre. Great idea!!!<BR><BR>Fab suggestions, all!! Thank you! And have a great weekend! : ) ~MaryC

If the film you are talking about is Queen Margot with Isabelle Adjani, I'd just warn you that it is extremely bloody and violent. It did have good actors, Adjani, Auteuil and Virna Lisi, but it is very violent. If you like historical dramas, you might enjoy the scenes and costumes, I don't remember a lot being in Paris, there are parts in other places (the beginning is about the St Bartholomew's massacre), but it's been 8 yrs or so since it came out.

c Jan 18th, 2002 10:30 AM

Sorry, but living in NYC, I am accustomed to seeing a lot of various films from all over the world, we are lucky here in that matter...and I guess as a result of that, I do not find myself bothered by violence in films,or at least films such as these.I am not talking about slasher movies, but when there is a battle or something of that nature in a film, I am not that bothered by the bloodshed..So I do not think to mention it in my recommendations of films, actually,it does not stand out in my memory at all in this film,Queen Margot..

"Until Sept." Not for kids but a very romantic chick flick.

BTilke Jan 20th, 2002 08:55 AM

Another vote for Diva and Frantic. I would add to that La Balance, which includes several cast members from Diva (most notably the guy detective). Get a subtitled, not dubbed version.<BR>I am one of the few apparently who did not like Amelie. It was cute, but also fake. Many of those charming Parisian scenes exist only on computers. I'd rather see a real Paris, warts and all, than a cutesy ersatz version.

MaryC Jan 24th, 2002 06:46 AM

Hello All, just checking in!!<BR><BR>Finally saw "Ronin" this past weekend. And must have to agree that it was a great movie - OMG, the CAR CHASE! Wow. De Niro was excellent (not a huge De Niro fan normally, sorry, but loved him in this).<BR><BR>Bloody & violent movies don't bother me as long as the movies are well-made. After all, I loved "Reservoir Dogs" surely one of the bloodiest movies I've ever seen. But smart!! So I'll try to find "Queen Margo". Definitely sounds interesting.<BR><BR>BT, I'm sorry you didn't care for "Amelie". But I respect your opinion. Maybe what I liked was the fact that it was cutesy/charming. Definitely need some of that right now. : ) I still must see "Diva" and "Frnatic" and thank you for mentioning "New Balance". Now added to the list!!<BR><BR>Pat, thanks for the "Until Sept" mention. Who's in it?<BR><BR>Have a great weekend~MaryC

MaryC Jan 24th, 2002 06:52 AM

Sorry - duh - "La Balance". Am I thinking of shoes? : )

SharonG Jan 24th, 2002 08:11 AM

For the person who loved Jean Seberg: you must rent "Bonjour Tristess" based on the novel by Francoise Sagen. She plays David Niven's daughter and she is darling. I think part of it might take place in Paris. Also watched "Last Tango in Paris" for the first time in 20 years. Had forgotten the erotic nature of Brando speaking French!

Sam, is this what you were looking for?

MaryC Feb 8th, 2002 04:13 PM

I'm sorry - I didn't see that someone had already topped this.<BR><BR>For future reference, Sam, just type in Paris movies or Paris videos in the search box shown at the top center - it should pull it right up.

mimi taylor Feb 8th, 2002 05:11 PM

La Balance, Mary C. is a great film. i recently saw the Brotherhood of the werewolf..and loved it would like to see a thread about that, as I see a very good connection with the KKK and Cardinal Law and the pedophile priests here in the Boston area.

Capo Feb 8th, 2002 05:11 PM

Mary, glad to hear you liked Ronin. I'd read that, prior to making it, the director, John Frankenheimer, boasted he was going to do two great car chase scenes, and I'd say he certainly pulled it off. He also talked about the appeal of doing the movie, saying something like "When you see a script that says 'Start in Paris, then cut to Nice', you really want to do that movie." <BR><BR>Anyway, if you liked "Ronin", I'm sure you'd like Roman Polanski's "Frantic", a very good thriller. <BR><BR>Frankenheimer also has another excellent film from a number of years ago, this one a political thriller set in Rome during the "reign" of the Red Brigades when they kidnapped and killed former Prime Minister Aldo Moro, called "Year of the Gun."

carmen Feb 8th, 2002 05:14 PM

I think Amelie is awesome. It's definitely one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Moulin Rouge would qualify as well, even though the scenes of Paris are mostly atmospheric.

c Feb 8th, 2002 07:43 PM

Hi,all~we also saw Brotherhood of the <BR>Wolf, and really enjoyed it.It was the top movie in France! Mary,I loved Ronin, it was on cable not long ago and I watched it again, and enjoyed it just as much as the first time.I loved the car chase in Nice..although the tunnel was pretty good also~tried to find my husband a leather jacket like the one DeNiro wore..couldn't find one-oh well, perhaps I can find one in Paris~careful, not to start a leather jacket shopping thread..:0)<BR>

MaryC Feb 11th, 2002 03:26 PM

Cigalachante (LOVE that name - or rather e-mail version of your name), even more great additions to this thread. Must add to my growing list. : )<BR><BR>Oh Capo, Ronin really was a fantastic movie. My sister and I enjoyed it for the Paris/Nice scenes (and that was truly a 1st-rate car chase) and of course my brother-in-law loved it as well. Such a great spy flick;so well made;so much tension!!! And I would also love to watch Frantic - thank you for your other suggestions as well.<BR><BR>Carmen, you enjoyed Amelie, too? It was a cute, funny movie, wasn't it? But I haven't seen Moulin Rouge yet. I will, though. Love Nicole Kidman AND Ewan McGregor!! Ewan is yummy.<BR><BR>Hi C! Trying to appropriate this thread for your own "leather jacket shopping" needs I see? Hmmm!!! ; ) Careful, you might get too "clubby".<BR>

c Feb 11th, 2002 03:38 PM

MaryC-Hehehe, clubby? mmmm, maybe we should start a Paris chocolate & shopping thread~but everyone is invited to join~

mike Feb 11th, 2002 04:18 PM

Saw another flick, new release on video,<BR>"Kiss of the Dragon" very violent and kinda heavy on sexual scenes...<BR>But....I was pleased to see some nice scenes around the wonderful city of Paris..<BR>Good Action Show.<BR>

MaryC Feb 12th, 2002 04:59 PM

Naturally, C, all is welcome in this clubby atmosphere!! Each just needs to post!!<BR><BR>Mike, who is in "Kiss of the Dragon" - a vaguely recall the title?? Thanks for the vote!!

mike Feb 12th, 2002 07:14 PM

Jet Li is the main star. It also has one of the Fonda's in it.. I think Bridgett (sp?) Fonda.<BR>

MaryC Feb 12th, 2002 07:40 PM

Yeah, thanks, Mike!! Duh! Total brain fart over here.<BR><BR>Sounds like I need to watch it this weekend, eh!!

Topping for Jeanne ~ :)

Leslie Jul 12th, 2002 06:20 PM

I don't think anyone mentioned the Bourne Identity yet. Saw it recently and was very busy location guessing. Much of the film was shot in Paris and I got those "Paris pangs", again.

cl Jul 12th, 2002 07:30 PM

Hey Leslie, I just saw The Bourne Identity a couple of weeks ago and just came across this old thread. Those Paris car chase scenes next to the Seine were pretty good. I agree with you-seeing those Parisian landmarks and those street scenes makes me wish I were in Paris.

Marie Jul 12th, 2002 07:42 PM

Did anyone else notice the word "Police" witten on the sides of those "french" police cars that were chasing those two? So,do you really believe it was all filmed in Paris?

cl Jul 12th, 2002 07:50 PM

Marie, before you try to be so smart, you need to check facts. For one, if you check the Eyewitness Paris guidebook, there is a picture of a Parisian police car blatantly emblazoned with the word "POLICE" on its side.

MaryC Jul 12th, 2002 09:13 PM

On Jeanne's thread The Bourne Identity was mentioned. But yeah, I got those Paris pangs, too. I'm thinking one of the street scenes was in the 7th, Ave. de la Motte Piquet maybe??

Lisa Jul 12th, 2002 09:24 PM

The Bourne Identity shows a lot of Pont Neuf, Sumartan department store(spelling?) from Pont Neuf, St Germain...Just watched on DVD The Affair of the Necklace...lots of scenes at Versailles.

xxx Jul 13th, 2002 07:43 AM

Re: The Bourne Identity the small hotel the two main characters stayed at in Paris appears to be Hotel de la Paix on Blvd. Raspail in the 14th dist.

hi, mary!<BR><BR>Until September starred Karen Allen and Thierry Lhermitte (lately of The Dinner Game). i found myself trying to track down the various locations using a paris telephone directory at my local library after i saw it several years ago. karen allen's character stayed at what turned out to be the Hotel du Bois on the rue du Dome (i think).<BR><BR>also, i'd recommend When the Cat's Away which takes place near the Bastille area, with scenes on the trendy rue Oberkampf neighborhood in the 11th arr. this is the film that made Pause Cafe a tourist atraction...

MaryC Aug 14th, 2002 03:29 AM

Thanks, Sandye!! Great idea. : )
