Hi-
I think I'm the one who gave you the information about the Youth Hostel Oia. I've just returned from Oia and can tell you what's going on at the YHO. The owner, Manolis Karvounis, temporarily closed the doors because his mother is sick and he's spending a lot of time with her in Athens. It's possible that by now he's back on the island and has opened the

Sorry, accidentally posted before I was finished!
It's possible that by now he's back on the island and has opened the hostel back up, but as he explained to me, he doesn't have the time to answer all the emails he gets from people asking about room availability. He won't make reservations because his past experience is that many people don't show up when promised, and because they aren't required to leave a credit card deposit they don't even bother to contact him to cancel their reservation. He loses too much business because of this. Consequently the beds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are 86 beds as well as lots of outside sleeping space, so the chances of being turned away are very slim. He told me that last summer there were a couple of days when every bed was full and he had at least another 50 people sleeping outdoors on the premises.
The price of a bed is 13 Euros/night and includes a simple breakfast of coffee or tea, bread, butter and jam.
So if you were trying to contact him about a reservation, don't bother to do so anymore, you'll never get a reply. But if you want to call him he will answer the phone if he's there. Call after breakfast (Greece time, of course!), between 10:00 am and 8:00 pm in the evening. He or his girlfriend Gaby will be there to answer the phone. If no one answers the phone it means he's still in Athens with his mother and the places is closed.
I do know that she's due to be released from the hospital very soon and they'll bring her back to Oia, so even if she's still sick he'll be there to open the doors. Again, you really don't need to worry about getting a bed, if he's open there will be room. Once you're in Greece you can go to any magazine kiosk and buy an OTE phone card and call him at 2286071465 to make sure he's open and ask any questions you might have.
Good Luck and Have Fun!

Lee you ROCK! Thank you so much for your great reply. That is exactly what I needed to know.
I really hope that his mother gets better soon. I will still plan to stay there as we aren't travelling until the end of August. I'll try to call a few days before we depart to see if he's open or not.
Thanks again - all your great advice here and on other boards (I've found you all over the place!) has been invaluable in planning our trip.

Brotherleelove: I saw on one of your postings that you have pictures of this hostel? Could you possibly email them to me? Thanks, Skye

The Ecorama Holidays office in the bus square has the cheapest published rooms in Oia at the 'Casa Francesca,' although prices are not cheap anymore on Santorini.

After further thought I wanted to add that when I was in Oia in May-June I saw some 'room for rent' (domatia) signs here and there throughout the village for establishments that weren't connected to a rental agency and that didn't have a website, but were just local people trying to get a little of the tourist business for themselves. If you take the time to walk around and look in the back alleyways for some of these you might come up with a better deal than you can find on the net dealing with an established provider.
