Oia Restaurants
The Greece forum has been relatively quiet lately except folks already planning trips for 09. I am anxious for trip reports for all the Fodorites who had their holidays in May/June. In the meantime, I am leaving in 2 weeks and just have some last minute details to work out.
Any suggestions for dinner in Oia? We are not 4-star folks, but would like a nice meal on a terrace with a view and some wine. I will take everyone's advice and have a meal at Katrina's down on the wharf, but I don't know whether that will be lunch or dinner. The thought of walking back up the hill after dinner and wine isn't too pleasant. Suggestions at under $100? We will be there for only 2 nights. |
Nikola's Taverna in Oia is a really nice place. Very good, casual food, and if you sit upstairs on the roof, you will have an incredible view of town and the water across the street.
Also about Katrina's: You can have the restaurant call a taxi for you if you don't want to hike up the stairs after dinner. Taxis do go back and forth to an area near the restaurants. You just have to call in advance and expect to wait maybe up to 30 minutes. |
There are only a few restaurants with a view in Oia. There's Kastro, Lotza, Pelekanos Cafe, Seagull, Neptune, Skala, Thalami, Ambrosia and Feredini. The last two are very expensive. There's another next to Pelekanos but I can't remember the name. I recommend Skala and the Pelekanos Cafe, or if you want to watch the sunset go to Kastro.

It's really hard to beat that great sunset view at to Kastro (which also has good food), but we also enjoyoed our less expensive meals at Skala and Laokasti, and our lunch at Ambrosia.

Down the cliff from Oia is the waterfont area of Amoudi. Right on the waterfront there is a row of restaurants that serve mostly fish; the freshest fish you'll ever have in a restaurant. My wife says it was the best meal she ever had. I think the setting had something to do with it. Go at night for the best atmosphere. Take a taxi.

The 3 restaurants on the wharf at Amoudi are Katina's, Dimitris and Sunset. I prefer daytime meals down there so I can watch the activities on the wharf and any ships passing by. The best swimming on the island is actually at the end of the seawall that begins on that wharf, about 1/4 mile walk to the end.

Here is a page from one of my photo galleries that includes shots of Amoudi, the nearby chapel with people swimming, and the black cat sitting on the overturned tables at Katrinas. It was taken at 10:00 that morning as they hosed down the floors. We had a late lunch there later that day with Barbra and Jim who had taken the launch from the Ralph Lauren yacht. It was a very good day on Santorini.

Bobthenavigator- OMG. I just found your photos. Specatcular and breath-taking. Thank you for sharing. I only hope to capture some similar to yours on my own trip.

Bob-
Great photos. Check the one on the first page, "Greek Chapel." Somehow you've managed to reverse the image. The curved staircase should be on the left side of the frame. |
Bobthenavigator or Brotherleelove: Where, exactly, is that Greek Chapel located.
We will be there in a couple of weeks and this is something I want to see for myself!!! |
It's below Oia on the little rock island at the end of the seawall that begins on the wharf at Amoudi. You can't see it unless you swim across the narrow channel (150 feet) to it or find someone with a boat in Amoudi to take you there. You can see it from above from various vantage points in Oia.

Here's a photo of the rock island and people at the end of the seawall, about 1/4 mile walk from the wharf. The chapel is on the backside of the rock.

very cool photo Brotherlee looking forward to swimming there, love the thalassa

I didn't take that photo.
Since I posted that photo there has been a rockslide that now blocks the path. Be prepared to climb over it if you want to reach the swimming spot. |
