Well, Travelnut and his/her WP and NYT URLs has said it all. Basically, the trendy trail starts at Bastille/rue de la Roquette, to rue Oberkampf, and onwards to Belleville/Gambetta. Saint-Germain (not Saint-GermainE, PLEASE!!! ) des Prés might have been hip sometime during the 4th Republic and Saint-Michel in May 68...

My husband & I stayed in the 7th arr during our first stay in Paris. Our hotel was close to a metro stop and it was easy to get to the sights. There were many restaurants in the area within walking distance. Quite frankly, it was lovely to return to our quiet neighbourhood after a busy day of sightseeing. Stay in the 7th (unless you are REALLY in need of night time bustle) and make plans to return to Paris! We have since stayed in the 5th & 6th arr and loved those areas as well!

7th is quite expensive because of many famous/rich people living here, very residential and no night life. I suggest better 6/5/16/8/9

On my first trip we stayed in an apartment the 16th very near the Trocadero. For my second trip I am certainly going for a double digit arrondisement apartment.

With the transit system you can really be anywhere and have great access in Paris.

We stayed in the 7th and I agree with the above post that it was really nice to return to the quiet after each day. We could get most anywhere in short order on the metro from our hotel. We would return to the hotel for a quick wash up after the day on the streets and in museums and then go back out to dinner. There were literally dozens of restaurants within a 5 minute walk from our hotel. I loved the area. We were 1.5 bolcks from Rue Cler and the metro.
Wish I were going back !

Wow!!! You must be dizzy by all these suggestions...! So many opnions , so many different tastes... Stop worrying and start to enjoy , the city is really easy. Nightlife? Just choose what you want to do every night (restaurant , shows, wine bars there is a huge choice of everything , pick something and walk or take the metro or a cab it is not THAT enormous...!
I do not want to say'I know best' but - I know it sounds ridiculous - I have been in Paris at least 80 times (4 times a year at least during 20 years )for the simple reason that my husband is French and our children live in Paris. Believe me:
the metro network is just SO easy, walking is a pleasure during the day -there is really no problem. As long as you stay relatively central everything will be just easy. That's why
I agree with many that 7 is just fine and has a very nice atmosphere. Indeed it all depends where is the hotel.
Have a look at the SLH chain (expensive though) on the net.
If the Eiffeltower is really THE view you want then focus on that, but if you have a charming hotel who cares about the view you'll see the Eiffel enough.
And Eiffel is definitely not the most convenient , I agree with Weadles. 7th is just fine as is 1st. just pick a nice hotel .
Personnally I always go near Louvre and Palais Royal because you can walk both on the right and to the left wing and you are near museum and shops (but my hotel is not what you call charming if not I would recommend that )
Anyway: yes you can be out late and get back to the hotel easily!! I do it all the time. I was there again this weekend on saturday night we stayed out until half past one in the morning NO problem.

hey tod...

I am seriously considering staying at a hotel in the 16th right behind Place du Trocadero (cnr.Raymond Poincare) for my next visit. It's not as busy as 5th &6th but the rooms do offer spectacular views of Lady Eiffel

can you share the names of these hotels? I for one love that view, although this thread is giving me the thought of trying a view of of Notre Dame and the Seine and the Arc for future trips. (stay tuned for a new thread looking for those best views sometime in the distant future )

Sure Kwren:
Best Western Au Trocadero, 3 Avenue Raymond Poincare, 7016.
Suggested by another person on this forum but I don't remember their name.
They seemd very happy with it.
I took a look around on PagesJaunes and it is a great location.
Previously when I stayed in the 16th it was at Hotel Gavarni, rue Gavarni.
Lovely small family run hotel but I found the uphill from the metro (Passy) I bit too tiring after a hard days walking!

I notice your NY225 screen name. If you are looking for East Village type nightlife, then east is definetly better, and the Oberkampf and other 11th and 12th locations would probably suit you.

If you want midtown ambience, then consider all the advice given above to stay centrally on the Left Bank. Do you think midtown NY is too touristy? For a short visit to NY I prefer a 40 to 60s location on the center avenues. But them, despite several visits a year, I'm a tourist and not a "real" New Yorker. I'm guessing you're a toursit too, and not a "real" Parisian.

Maybe this will help you figure it out. Over by the Eiffel Tower, think UES, as a sort of comparison. Maybe upper 80s, low 90s.

The 4th in Paris is great for us, but we are older tourists and also like the 6th and eastern parts of the 7th.

I refrained from adding to the thread earlier because it seemed to me that a poster was giving me a hard time. But I thought this might help a little.
