Do's:

Learn a few words of Greek like "please" and "thank you" to engratiate yourself to locals and receive better treatment.

Eat at places where you see Greek people and not tourists.

Get lost once in awhile, it's the best way to see things you wouldn't otherwise by looking at a map.

Do escape to an island, even if it's only to a local one like Aigina or Hydra.

Do use public transportation whenever possible, it's inexpensive.

Do swim in the sea at least once. It's beautiful, clear and refreshing.

Do wear comfortable shoes. The streets and roads are not always well-paved or even.

Do bother to see sites in Athens, which can be seen in one day. They are close to each other and worth a look.

Don'ts:

Don't be bothered with a sun hat unless you have a condition or are sensitive to the sun. It's October and a very good time with very good weather.

Don't stay more than a day or two in Athens.

Don't let anyone on the street convince you to go anywhere or eat anything.

Don't show a lot of skin or sunburn. Only tourists do this, and it's silently frowned upon.

Don't insist on things being done like back home. You're in a foreign country and it's great to enjoy something different for a short time. If nothing else, it may give you a better appreciation!

Don't worry about the small stuff, and just have a great time!
