In addition to the central market, you might also be interested in visiting a laiki, a neighbourhood farmers' market sprawling over several blocks one day a week. The day varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. You can read a good introduction here: http://www.true-athens.com/2008/02/2...rmers-markets/. Most of the major markets are also listed on the thread, but you could also ask your hotelier for the nearest laiki. True-Athens is a great site for ideas about Athens off the beaten path. I don't know if the outdoor movie theatres will still be open in September, but that could be another great experience.
