In addition to the central market, you might also be interested in visiting a laiki, a neighbourhood farmers' market sprawling over several blocks one day a week. Most of the major markets are also listed on the thread, but you could also ask your hotelier for the nearest laiki. True-Athens is a great site for ideas about Athens off the beaten path. I don't know if the outdoor movie theatres will still be open in September, but that could be another great experience.
