Odessa by river cruise
My husband and I would like to visit and explore Odessa because his family came from the vicinity.
Have seen river cruises advertised. What experience have you had with this type of vacation? Does one need to speak Russian or Ukrainian? (We don't).
Thank you.
Jane

There are varying Dnieper river cruises out of Kyiv. You can go out for the day, or spend a few days going all the way to the Black Sea. However, you would probably be spending your time better by enjoying Odesa and the beach there with perhaps a short day-cruise out on the sea. There probably aren't any published cruise schedules, you should be able to arrange it once there. If you are going through Kyiv, then schedule a couple days to see the sights if you have the time. Although English is spoken by some, and to greatly varying degrees, it can be a difficulty.

Contact Unipress in Odesa at:
http://www.odessa-ua.com/
There is no such thing as one-day cruise from Kiev to Odessa. Too far away. I doubt there is a river cruise from Kiev to Odessa at all.
But there are Black Sea cruises that include Odessa, Yalta in Crimea, possibly Sochi, Varna in Bulgaria, Constanza in Romania. Sometimes there are small ships from Turkey w/ one-two days stay in Odessa. Don't know details about those.

The above post illustrates my point regarding comprehension of English. No one said anything about a cruise from Kyiv to Odesa, let alone it taking one day.

In visiting Odesa, you may also find it interesting to visit Crimea. But, it's an overnight train ride between Odesa and Simferopol.

For some links, photos, and info on our visit to Odesa, Crimea, and Kyiv, please visit:

http://home.at.net/~db-ukraine

Thank you all for the different responses which will help us when planning the anticipated cruise for next year. Unfortunately, we have already spent our vacation in Wales at a school reunion.
