Odd TV or Media?
 

What was the oddest, funniest, or other ..est TV or media you saw overseas. We cracked up over the Weakest Link, in the UK and Ireland,with a really mean woman who is the questioner (hostess would be too kind a description). Yikes! just found out she will be here in the US too! That's my submission. Others?

I realy loved the topless Female sports reporters scoccer scores in Italy.

Danna, <BR>I totally agree with you about "The Weakest Link". the first time my teenage sons and I heard her snap "You're-the-weakest-link-goodbye", our chins just about hit the floor! After that we just cracked up! That phrase was mentioned in a pantomime we saw at Christmas in Edinburgh and my sons almost rolled on the floor laughing. They now refer to several professional sports players as the "weakest link"!

The funniest I've ever seen was in Italy, some sort of game show based on "Musical Chairs," but also a word game of some kind was involved, where the contestants each had to take off a piece of clothing as they lost points. But there's a good one in France, too, called "Qui est Qui?" that involves half a dozen people pretending to besomething they aren't and the audience has to guess who is who. Watching a woman who claimed to be a butcher try to cut up a side of beef into normal cuts had us just about on the floor.And then there was the man who claimed to teach flamenca lessons.....not!

Old reruns of "Little House on the Prairie" dubbed in French.

When I was in spain last year I enjoyed the old re-Runs of who's the Boss they go out of there way to find spanish speaking actors to dub the voice it souned exactly like Tony Danza but speaking spanish. I was informed they do that with all the actors. they try to find a sound a like and they do all the dubbing for all of the actors work they become the offical voice for each actor or actress they sound like a remarkable likeness

In a similar vein... <BR> <BR>Audio-animatronic characters in 'Enchanted Tiki Birds' & 'Splash Mountain' Disneyland Tokyo singing 'In the Summertime', 'Zip-a-de-do-da' etc. in Japanese...

1. Decades-old episodes of "My Mother the Car" (who remembers, eh?) appearing (dubbed) in prime time on Channel 3 in Paris, followed by more recent airings of "Santa Barbara." (No wonder they pretend not to speak English. Who in hell would want to deal with people with automotive parents, conniving with big haired divas?) <BR> <BR>2. Ten year old episodes of "Coronation Street" dubbed into Finnish, beamed intentionally into the (then) USSR. WHAT were they thinking? <BR> <BR>3. Turkish and Egyptian soap operas, viewable in Israel. Oh - my - gawd. Twitching moustaches and eye liner to die for.

A German game show in which you had to guess which woman was actually a drag queen. Or was it guess who was really a woman. Very strange.

The first time I saw a dubbed 'cowboy' movie in Germany. "Hande hoch sonst sheese ich dich" (Hands up or I'll shoot you). <BR>

Laughed myself hoarse watching white, French rappers. Nothing like those droppy-pantsed, marshmellow jeune hommes trying to look surly and contemptuous, chanting "Ouai, si VOUS vouLEZ, Ouai, Ouai....."

John, I am a Coronation Street addict! In russian it may be abit odd tho! I found asking about the "Street" schedule helpful to me in the UK and Ireland! Thank God for Canadian TV! <BR>

No, Danna, it was in Finnish, but sent over the border with a strong signal into Russia - go figure. I tried to tell if they were accenting the Finnish to mimic the class distinctions on the 'Street, but my Finnish language skills are, shall we say, lacking? (Way too many vowels for my taste.)

John, Yes Finnish is quite a language and a people. My friend's dad Sulo Havumaki created a Finnish answer to St. Patricks day. "St. Urho's day" who "saved" Finland from the grasshoppers in the grapevines. The colors are green and purple. I've worn green and purple on the March 18 since the early 70's. Funnier yet, St. Urho's day has taken on a life of it's own here in Minnesota, people think it's a traditional day! Who says one person can't make a difference!

My two strangest were the Nascar race dubbed in French. What made it so strange was that you could still hear the American Commentators on the tv. See crash, here Americans say something, then here French commentary! <BR> <BR>My other was live broadcasting for about 4 straight days from the Chelsa Flower Show. I loved the show in person, but watching the British announcers try to strech out these flowers for a week got pretty funny!

Check out "Ciao, Darwin" on Italian TV. Two teams compete against each with the audience voting. The teams sing, dance, do skits, model clothes, that sort of thing. Now for the fun part. The teams are made up of groups like the gays against the straights, the nudists against the business people (both teams in "suits"), drag queens against beauty queens. You get my drift. Also funny is watching old, old shows dubbed into Italian like Robin Hood, Dragnet, the one with Buffy and Mr. French (can't remember the name now), anyway I could go on and on. Also watched John Wayne in The Searchers in Italian. And a bunch of Rocky movies. But then Sylvester Stallone doesn't need a translator to say "uh," 200 times. <BR>
