Octoberfest with Mom
Mom, a pretty spry 83 year old, and I wish to go to Octoberfest 2005,probably toward the end of its run.
She is mobile, but tires after an hour of walking and stairs are a problem.
How would I organize the Octoberfest portion of the trip (we will do more than drink beer-in fact, she doesn't even drink).
Any recommendations for hotels in the 120E range??
thanks,
Keith

Hotel prices have this tendency to rise dramatically in Munich during Oktoberfest so what may cost 120 Euro now may not then.
However, from experience (twice) I will offer this: find a hotel that you like and book it NOW...by e-mail or fax/phone if necessaary. Some of the more popular centrally-located establishments are booked a year in advance (once we ended up staying in Augsburg which didn't turn out to be bad after all but that's another story).
Good luck and have a great trip.

We stayed in a great hotel across from the grounds a few years back. Very short walking distance and easy walk to the subway then. UGH! Can't think of the name. i'll look it up and post back tonight. It had a great breakfast every morning-wasn't fancy but was nice.

The several main Oktoberfest tents are all grouped together; very little walking required; all are similar in offerings so you need not walk to all (of course each has different nuances, so it's nice to pop into others but basically to experience the tremendous exuberance of the fest one or two will suffice.
"there is no beer in heaven, that's why we are all here" a popular song in the tents

The first Tuesday IIRC is "family day", and consequently things are more relaxed. If you go "early on a weekday", ie, Mon-Thu before 3-4PM, you should easily find a table at which to sit & enjoy the food/beer. Note that there is also a wine tent, as well as a few cafe-tents (where you can get coffee & cake).

Hi bay,
I can highly recommend the Hotel Uhland.
It is very close to the Theresienwiesen.

An 83 year old teetotalling mother, and Octoberfest?
Don't you have any town drunks she can watch, for far less money?
Perhaps you should test her reaction to conspicuous over-consumption in a local setting, before committing to Munich. My memory of Octoberfest, prior to falling asleep on an embankment, are:1)how loud, obnoxious, drunk, etc 85% of the people were;2)how nice the music was;3)how many steins the waitresses could carry. Nothing else. Somehow, altho I was 42 and my mom 74 at the time, I couldn't envision her finding it at all pleasurable. And she liked beer.
