October weather?

Hello-

We will be traveling through Italy October 14-30. Does anyone have weather/clothing suggestions/information? It would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Phaedra78. I think you may be new to this board? Welcome if that is true.

I am pretty new myself, as I have not yet been on my trip. I leave for Italy in Early October.

I can't answer your question as expertly as you might wish except to say that I have been told it will be on the cooler, rather than warmer side of things. Italy also experiences rainy weather in October.

There are a TON of posts on the subject of weather and TONS of posts on clothing on this board. Have you entered the search terms in the little search box?

Post here again if you have trouble finding what you need.

PS. The experts on this board will more than likely suggest you add your country of destination to your subject line in future posts. It helps them decide if they want to read your post.

Have fun, these boards are a great source of information. Also check out www.SlowTrav.com it is VERY comprehensive!

Here are a couple of websites with historical temperature, humidity, and precipitation averages by month for various cities worldwide.

Last year we travelled from Florence through Tuscany to the Amalfi Coast and Rome from the 1st through 13th of October. Florence and Rome had perfect weather--upper 60s to 70s and sunny. While travelling through Tuscany, it was usually nice during the day but rainy at night for some reason and very windy. We did get one full day of showers though. While on the AC, it rained every day, usually clearing up in the afternoon and got very cold at night. I would not travel there in October--too iffy with the weather and that is the one place where it would have really been nice to have good weather as the ferries were not running from Positano to Capri due to the weather.

Besides the websites mentioned above, you might get somewhat better answers if you specify where in Italy you are headed. It's a fairly big country, and over the period you mention, the weather might match everything from the mountains of West Virginia to Key West, at the same time of year.

Best wishes,

Rex

The weather is spectacular...or at least it was the times I was there in late Sept/Oct. and mid Oct/Nov. Cool mornings, warm days into the mid 70s and cool evening. Take breathable things you can layer. It may rain briefly but during our trips the rain was only a couple of times during the evening. What other kind of information/suggestions are you looking for? You need to be specific.

Spent 10 days in Italy one October and it rained practically non-stop the whole time. We were in Florence and north from there and in northern Italy it was said that a rainy season at this time is not unusual. I think the farther south you go the less likely this would be. But even in Rome on that trip it rained for three days straight. At least you don't have to worry about getting an umbrella - when the first drop of rain comes down in Rome a legion of umbrella-sellers descends on the streets - everywhere, to a bother, people are asking you to buy their cheap umbrellas - bring your own. Probably weather would be nice but be prepared for rain, especially in the north.

Goes to show you that any type of weather is possible. For the most part, the temps and crowds are just right. If that's the best time for you to go, I'd do it.

Phaedra, I just received two emails from friends in the Venica area this morning. Both commented that September was beautiful but now it is getting very cold. If you will be in the north do bring a warm coat. And yes it generally rains (and sometimes fantastic electrical storms in the northeast region). Have a beautiful trip, I love Italy in October. Less tourist and Italians are generally relaxed because of their "August vacation".
