Oct.12-27 2008 Rome,Florence,Venice then go down South
3 couples have booked our flight to and from Rome Oct. 12th-Oct.27th 2008. We would like to plan approx 3 days in each in using the fast train for transportation between Rome,Florence and Venice, train down to Sicily,Calabria,(renting a van there)fly back to Rome late on the 23rd. and leave from Rome on 24th. Is this a practical itinerary for first timers to Italy? Our flights are booked but nothing else yet.We want to go to Sicily and Calbria because our parents and grandparents were born there.

Are you leaving the 24th or the 27th? It will be more like 2 days in each if you consider travelling and settling in time. Do you arrive on the 12th, or leave hom eon the 12th and arrive on the 13th.
If it's the 24th, this is way too much. If you want to do Venice, I would recommend you book a connecting flight to Venice upon arriving in Rome, then work your way south.
Even if you're leaving on the 27th, this still seems likes lots of in between travelling for a 2 week trip. it doesn't leave you much time to take it all in.

For 15 nights, that is really a lot to cover, especially since Sicily is a very long way from the others. Have you checked the length of the train ride to Sicily? I think you'll find it very long. That's a lot of moving around, especially with 6 people (the more people, the longer it takes to get everywhere).
Since your flights are already booked into and out of Rome, I agree to continue on to Venice upon arrival. Spend 4 nights in Venice, 6 nights in either Florence (if you don't want to rent a car) or Tuscany (if you want a car) with daytrips around the area, and 5 nights in Rome. Save Sicily for another trip. You will go back!

ff,
You're really going to be rushing, especially since you are trying to include both Sicily and Venice on this trip. I would really recommend keeping it to 3 destinations.
To help you decide, get all your travel times listed, flight, trains, buses, etc. Add extra time for getting to the airport/station, security, buying tickets, missing a connection or train. Add time for finding hotels/getting lost once or twice, and checking in....
Add it all up and see how much time you will actually have to BE at your destinations. Helps you get the real picture....
Buona fortuna!

Go South or North but not both. We weny to Venice from Rome. You could go to Florence stay there a few nights and then go to Venice for a few nights. This would work. But you would be pushing it too much to go in both directions. visit my web site emilyandjim.info to see some of our trips to Italy.

We feel like we have to see Sicily and Calabria if only for a couple of days. So, if we visit Rome,Venice and then go down to Sicily and Calabria and fly back to Rome(skipping Florence)does this sound more doable?

maybe you should look into flying from Venice to Sicily and then flying back from Sicily to Rome - haven't looked into flights, but I think it would save some travel time...or maybe even take the night train from Venice to Naples and then flying to Sicily? Maybe choose between Sicily or Calabria this trip?

...in the spirit of full disclosure I am a BIG sucker for Venice and tryig to work it into MY next trip South ! (we will probably spend our time in the south and then night-train from Naples-Venice and then fly back to catch a flight home)

I would start in Sicily, connecting by air via Rome on Airone or Windjet. As was said, stay south this trip. I would make the Amalfi coast your 3rd destination as you drive back north to Rome. Spend 15 days in Tuscany, Florence and Venice next year.
