Oberammergau and Fussen
 

Is oberammergau and fussen doable within a day? We'd only like to see Neuschwanstein then probably go to oberammergau after late lunch and head back to munich on train. Do you guys think it's out of the way?

Oberammergau and Fussen would be doable together by car, but being on different train lines radiating from Munich, if you do not have a car you have to use buses. Be sure you have studied the timetable in advance and you know where are you going and which way.

And on your way to Oberammergau, I highly recommend stopping at the jaw dropping gorgeous Weiskirche!

Bayern Ticket covers the buses from Füssen to Hohenschwangau village where the castles are.
Return: take train to Oberammergau, after visiting take train to Murnau and change trains to Munich. Murnau has the best place to eat and drink if you are hungry. http://griesbraeu.de/

Wait-kinda confused-if I do that with bayern ticket which starts at 9 am-then I would be arriving in Fussen by lunch time and then if I tour both castles then I would be on my way to Oberammergau at 3pm which is kinda limited

I thought you were only doing one castle, lines can be long also. What time of year are you going? If summer you have long days. Do dinner in Oberammergau.

When you start at a Saturday or Sunday, the Bayern Ticket is valid also before 9am.

The "easiest" way from Neuschwanstein to Oberammergau is by bus from Füssen/Steingaden.
Don't know if that line also stops at Neuschwanstein parking lot, though.
You need to change to another line but it's a secured transfer.

As there are not many services per day, it could make the visit to Neuschwanstein a bit hectic, as you may need to rush to catch that one bus you want.

So it is doable on one day. But neither highly comfortable, nor very cheap (if you cannot travel on weekends, as the Bayern Ticket will not allow an early start).

If you are not a huge fan of Oberammergau and just want to see Neuschwanstein + something more, you could visit the castle, go back to Füssen, take the bus to Reutte (at least every 2 hours), take the scenic Ausserfernbahn from there to Garmisch, have dinner in Garmisch if you want, and train back to Munich.

You don't just get off in Füssen and tour Neuschwanstien. If you're going to Neuschwanstein you should use "Hohenschwangau, Schwangau (Schlösser)" as your destination at the DB site. The resulting schedule will then include the bus ride to the above stop where N'stein is. And you would use the same stop name to travel to Oberammergau from there.

Plan on spending a lot of time that day on public transport.

IMO you can easily see the main attractions in Oberammergau, on foot, in an hour or so. After you've seen about four or five of the woodcarver shops you've pretty much seen them all. The elaborate baroque Roman Catholic church is definitely worth a look. The Passion Play theater, even if it is open for a tour really isn't all that interesting.

ended up just going to n'stein since bayern tickets start at 9am and our hotel was not ideally located in neuaubing. so we have to wait for 9 to get to main train station then have breakfast there then catch the 9:5o train. we arrived there at about12:30 then the next available tour was 3pm so we finished at 4 and managed to catch the 6pm and arrived in munich at 8,quite impossible to have squeezed oberammergau esp i noticed most shops and restos close at 6

Hi nadiendelute - thanks for posting what you ended up doing! It gives us a perspective of what we'll be able to do when we make our trip next month.
We will have a rental car so we will be driving from Ga-Pa to Neuschwanstein. Perhaps we'll just go there for the exterior views so we should should have time to visit Oberammergau and/or other nearby less touristy places.

Garmisch to Neuschwanstein by car is only one hour. Oberammergau is very touristy. Not much more than a collection of religious woodcarving gift shops. Pretty, but touristy. We stopped for an hour or two twice. Second time was just for lunch (I think it was Post Hotel or Hotel Post) as we were passing through anyway.

The Tegelberg cable car and luge ride are just a mile or so from Neuschwanstein. The luge ride is a lot of fun.
