Oaxaca: Less Expensive Alternative to Europe
 

In light of the many threads lately about the weak dollar, I thought I'd share a fabulous place where the dollar is still strong.

Well, ok, it's really just a flimsy excuse to post this on the Europe board, where most of my fodor friends are found.

I just finished my first website "e-scrapbook": photos, narration, short videos. I had to teach myself web design to do it the way I wanted, but here it is: www.rgb3d.com/Oaxaca

I'll definitely want to take a look at it because we went to the Yucatan peninsula (not the Cancun beach resorts) over New Year's because we couldn't see spending the money on Europe this time around when the dollar is so weak. Apparenly others also have the same idea.

Wow kudos on a great job putting together your first scrapbook. I really enjoyed the vibrant pictures and the audio at the end - just lovely- looked like a wonderful trip. I think I've read that Oaxaca is known for some of the best cooking in Mexico and your descriptions were mostly positive, but tell us what did you think of the chapulines?

Maddy, while I am an adventurous eater, I draw the line at insects and rodents. Just my hang up. The rest of the group liked the chapulines pretty much, but thought the taste was mostly of the chilies mixed with them. By the way, I can't tell you how much I love that last video (the PS). I'm glad you enjoyed it.

LoveItaly, I think the problem is that the host for our site gets busy sometimes and you can't get to the page. Just try it again a bit later. Are you cutting and pasting the link, or typing it in? Because if you are typing it, be sure the O in Oaxaca is a capital O.

Wow Marilyn, I am just blown away. The most graphically pleasing journal I have ever seen. I sent it to my son who spends time in Mexico and owns a house in Merida, and to my daughter-in-law who has done similar trip reports--you may know her as Ms.Go on Fodors. The photography is wonderful. I am very envious !

Oh Marilyn, I am truly speechless. Your website is so beautiful that words cannot describe the feeling I had looking at it. And the videos, hearing the music and seeing the dancers. What a gift you have given all of us dear one.

I am email this to one of my friends in Italy who was born and raised in Mexico City. She gets so homesick at times.

Hi, Marilyn. I have another browser open and I am enjoying your pics and narratives. My laptop is a bit slow so I am typing you while the rest of your pics are downloading.

I also love traveling through the Mexican interior, although it's been a few years since I was last there. I think the Mexico is a country that's a little misunderstood, unless you visit a place like Oaxaca. Some Americans visit border towns and are so turned off by those that they never venture further into Mexico. Then others visit Cancun/Cozumel, and it's so commercialized and Americanized that you don't get the feel for life in Mexico. Oaxaca seems like a place where you can see the real Mexico. Furthermore, I am very glad you posted this in the Europe section, because I don't visit the Latin America section as much. I think that's because all my favorite posters are here in the Europe section, in fact, some of my faves are on this very thread.

Marilyn, your scrapbook is a thing of beauty. We spent a couple of days in Oaxaca back in 1995 (mainly to visit Monte Alban) and I wish we had spent more time in that lovely city. The natives were delightful. I have to admit I could not partake of the exotic delicacies of the region as I'm a finicky eater. Oaxaca is definitely on my return list. Thanks for sharing.
