NYT article on Paris
There was a nice piece on Paris in yesterday's NYT travel section, including some info on a budget hotel in the 8th, New Orient Hotel, that I've not seen mentioned here.

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/03/travel/WDPARI.html

It IS mentioned in the NY Times article, next to the Duc de Saint-Simon and the Hotel des Marronniers in the 6th and another budget place in the 18th arr. (Ermitage Hotel
** on Rue Lamarck).

The New Orient's web page is:
www.hotel-paris-orient.com
Doubles $81 to 102.

It probably hasn't been mentioned much on here, but it's not a new find from the NYT, either. That hotel was mentioned as a good budget, charming hotel in an article I have from Elle magazine in February 1998. That was the French edition of Elle magazine, so for the record, here are the hotels that issue listed as "10 hotels de charme in Paris, less than 500F". For those looking for budget hotels, there are a couple in this list that are not always named elsewhere. In order by area:

Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, 5e
Hotel du Globe, 5e
Hotel de l'Esperance, 5e
Hotel du Lys, 6e
Hotel du Champ de Mars, 7e
New Orient Hotel, 8e
Hotel Beaumarchais, 11e
Hotel Vert Galant, 13e
Hotel Boileau, 16e
Hotel Prima Lepic, 18e

Within that list, they had 3 categories of priorities--
Best: H du Lys, H des Gr Ecoles, New Orient
2nd choice: Boileau, l'Esperance, Champ de Mars, du Globe
3rd choice: Vert Galant, Prima Lepic, Beaumarchais
