NYC to Florence - Best route?

NYC to Florence - Best route?
We are flying to Florence for 3 weeks in January from New York City. Anyone know the best balance of quick and inexpensive? Fly to Rome and train to Florence? Or to Milan first? Or maybe Pisa? All suggestions appreciated!

Sometimes it is quickest to just do a short layover and get where you are going.

Any reason why you are not using one of many online booking sites to do a research? They will tell you both the travel timing and the prices for numerous options in seconds without having wait for someone else to tell you. Once you land in Italy somewhere, you are just a few hours to Florence from any major airports.

greg, yes, because often its more than just a timetable. I know that the airport in florence often has delays because of wind...(once ended up landing in milan and then taking an airline provided bus to florence which took forever)... that the runways are too short for certain planes (that, from a pilot friend), and that people's experiences embrace nuance in a way that kayak or trenitalia can't articulate. So maybe someone on this fabulous site (always helpful) knows that actually, aha (!) flying to Pisa from New York is the best way to do it, and you then get a quick bus that costs nothing... Who knows? But I won't know unless I ask. : )

Look into connecting through a European hub. eg Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich KLM/Delta through Amsterdam.
You could even consider Norwegian airlines out of Stewart Newburgh via Stockholm to Pisa.

Norwegian Air has direct flights to Rome from JFK and EWR, with excellent prices. My daughter will be flying with them in December.
I myself would prefer to fly into Rome and take the train to Florence. There are two daily trains to Florence that leave directly from the airport, avoiding the change in Rome. But even with the change in Rome, it's a fairly painless trip.

In summer, yes. Delta has non-stop JFK/PSA and the bus is about 5€/1hour to Florence (train would be about 8€). The bus from Pisa is not airline provided, it's just a shuttle bus service. Doesn't work for winter as that Delta flight is seasonal.

For flights without a change from NYC your options are Milan, Rome or Venice. If you don't mind a change of flights somewhere in Europe, throw BLQ into your search along with both Milan airports (although Milan is more of a trek onward), FCO, and PSA.
