NYC - Milan
 

Hello,

I am flying into Milan, Malpensa (MXP), airport from Newark (EWR) this November. I have heard the views of the Alps during the flight are amazing. I have looked on various sites and they all state that a particular side of the airplane flying in and flying out is most beautiful - the left for flying into Milan and the right for flying out of Milan. For those that have flown into this airport from the US, is this correct?

I'm also wondering about the view of the Alps during the flight, not just on landing/takeoff. Is there a particular side that is better or are both worth seeing?

With normal weather patterns what you state is correct. But if traffic control needs to give different instructions, the pilot may not do what you'd like him to do.

About further sights - it doesn't take long to gain altitude and also move away - I remember looking down and seeing glimpses of the French alps in gaps of clouds, from up high, a little bit after take-off, but don't expect too much on that front.

While in Milan, on a good day you get great views of the distant alps from the rooftop of the Duomo, the huge cathedral. There are a myriad of skinny sculptures up there, making for great photo ops, and it's just a curious feeling clambering all over and looking down into the city below. The access is from the outside of the church, either by steep and narrow spiral steps or by a lift (for a few Euros).

If there is neither mist nor fog (nor clouds) the Alps can also be seen from Malpensa airport

....and of course from Monte Campo dei Fiori, Monte Generoso, Monte Lema, Monte San Salvatore, Sasso del Ferro....

The views of cloud cover can be amazing, also.

I have flown into Milano several times and had great views more than once. Here are two examples (and yes, sit on the left side of the plane on the flight TO Milan - and flying in is where you get the best views, when flying out you usually rise too quickly to get great views)

To get your head near, although not in, the clouds, I recommend the roof of the central duomo (cathedral). Stairs or elevator will take you up to where the gargoyles enjoy a wonderful view over the city. No co-pilot needed although some Catholics consider God fills that role. http://www.duomomilano.it/en/
