NYC Get-together

About a month ago I posted asking whether there was any interest in a NYC or Philadelphia get-together in January or February. There was some interest expressed in a GTG in NYC.

I'd be glad to help organize one, but, because I do not live in NYC or go there often, I'm not in a good position to choose a restaurant and make arrangements. Would anyone be willing to take on that task?

If you're interested, please keep this thread active. You can also e-mail the above e-mail address if you want to.

It looks like every major metro area in the US except NYC (and Philadelphia) is having get-togethers. Aren't we freindly enough?

maybe we are all just wary new yorkers (or Philadelphians..)....I think we have been trained to keep our heads down and our eyes averted!

We had a nice get-together in NYC in the fall of 2001, and people said they wanted to do it again. I'm in NJ and can easily get to either NYC or Philadelphis. I haven't lived in NY (Brooklyn) since I was nine. It's a good thing, I guess, because I'm not very good at keeping my head down and eyes averted. I hate to miss anything.

I attended the first April 2000 NYC Get-Together at Cabana Carioca, a Brazilian restaurant in New York City (see photo at Monica's website http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com/files/AprNYC00.jpg ). It was a Sunday brunch and it was fun. I recalled Fodor's VP-Marketing also attended and we had a nice discussion on some new products development she was working on. Fodor's also sent a gift for all attendees; the latest edition of the Fodor's NYC Guide. Very nice. I took the train into the city (about two hours; beautiful ride along the Hudson River).

I'll be looking forward for another (Spring?) event; may I suggest we e-mail the Fodor's staff for a suggestion near their NYC office? My husband and I have been talking about a weekend in the city for dinner and a play and this would be a great opportunity to also meet up with some Fodorites!! :-D

Hi,
I also live in NJ and would be interested in attending in either NYC/NJ or PHL.

Just got back from 2 weeks in AUS (see that forum for my trip report) and also just got back from 5 nts in SOuthampton (but that was business)

Tried to get a get together in SYD for New Years EVE and while all of us could not get together small groups were able to meet up. I met a Fodorite from Wales.

I'll keep checking for furthur details.
Cheers,
Pat

Count us in! We live near NYC and would love to meet other Fodorites.

If we're doing it in NYC, we need a New Yorker to volunteer to find a restaurant. I would volunteer to help with other details, like keeping track of who will attend, but really dealing with the restaurant is much easier for a local. If there are very few interested, or you're willing to wing it, we could meet at the Metropo, itan Museum of Art, spend time there, and either try to find space to eat lunch together or go out on the streets and take our chances finding someplace big enough. But that might not work too well, so it's better to have a reservation for a set time and place, and for that, we need someone who lives or works or very frequently visits NYC to choose the place and make a reservation. (If there's enough interest in doing it in NJ, however, I could do it.)

Use the e-mail address in the first post for any suggestions/questions that you'd rather not post here. It's just an e-mail address I set up for this purpose.

What's SYD? (I'm terrrible at acronyms.)

I'd be interested in the NYC-GTG, but I also live in NJ.

Maira Jan 18th, 2004 07:10 AM

I like the suggestion of meeting at a central spot (the Met) and also to have reservations lined up somewhere near the meeting spot. You guys want to limit this post to the Europe Forum or expand to the US Forum? I say this because the US Forum has quite a bit of NYC posters, who may be willing and able to suggest/arrange.

cmt Jan 18th, 2004 07:14 AM

You can post it on the NYC forum. You can give them the e-mail address in the first post, and I'll give you the password if you e-mail me there, so then you can read the messages posted there by US forum people (or others). I never post on the US forum--or maybe I have, but very rarely and not recently--so if I were to post about a GTG, people would be suspicious of me.

(I'm hoping for a winter GTG. I lose interest in the city and generally have other things I'd rather do once the weather warms up.)

Maira Jan 18th, 2004 07:21 AM

I'll do and will e-mail you to coordinate from there. I'll specify a Winter GTG. Let's see what happens !! :-D

cmt Jan 18th, 2004 06:06 PM

If you'd e-mail the address in the first post of this thread we can develop a mailing list. Eventually we will probably use Evite, which requires registration (free), but for now it might help to have an e-mailing list.

SYD = Sydney Australia

A bit of a distance from NYC.

cmt Jan 22nd, 2004 08:01 PM

If you are one of the people interested and haven't e-mailed the address listed above yet, please do so. We need to have an e-mailing list, so we don't have to discuss details on the open board.
