Any commemts on these hotels? God, Bad? Location? etc. Also while in london I want ot make one day trip oitside london what would be a better choice Bath and Stonehedge or Oxford, cotswold and avon. Any other comments suggestions on restaurants, sites, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I wll be sure to post a trip commentary on my return. Thanks

What a hoot this message header is!

Kinda like:

A train leaves New York westbound at 5:00 pm, traveling 80 mph. A train leaves Chicago eastbound at 6:00 pm, traveling 70 mph.

Is it okay for a passenger on the eastbound train to bring sandwiches and softdrinks on board?
We did this exact trip in March and had a great time. I'm not sure what you are into, but we felt we wanted to see as much as possible, since we weren't sure when we would be back.
London
- Do Not buy a London Pass
- Do buy a 1,2 (or more) day unlimited underground pass (Visitor Travel Card). This will be the best money you spend if you are planning on doing alot of sightseeing.
- If you like Seafood and want a fresh and delicious dinner at a very reasonable price, go to "Fish" (check www.zagats.com)
-If you like Indian food, try "Zaika" on Kensington Street. Looks dressier then it is, need to make a reservation, fantastic meal. It is across the street from Kensington Palace.
- If you like game.. try "Rules", which is the oldest restaurant in London. No jacket required, need a reservation, a bit pricey but delicious and the service is perfect.
- The London Eye is slow and there is no narrative while you are inside but I felt it was worth going to. You get great views of the city and it is a very interesting overall experience. If you plan to go, make reservations ahead of time so you don't need to wait on line. You can go to Londoneye.com or check the British Airways website, they own/run it.
- If you are into "Broadway shows", go see one here. Alot of the famous plays that come to the States, start in London. The theaters are beautiful, the tickets are cheaper then NY and any children you find inside are extremely well behaved.
- Kensington Palace is better to visit late in the day (i think it closes at 5 pm). There is less of a crowd and you get to enjoy the tour more (Queen Victoria's old quarters, Princess Diana's dresses, Queen Elizabeth's dresses, etc...)
- Taking one of the big red buses was also totally worth it, because similiar to NY, it takes you all around town, you can hop on and off and the commentary is very helpful and interesting.
- If history interests you, take the Jack the Ripper tour from Tower Hill Tube Station. The tour guide has written a book on the subject and the tour ends at the Ten Bells Bar which was open when the murders took place and is located in the center of the area in which all of the women were killed.
-Westminster Abbey is another long line, but amazing inside.
-Watching the changing of the guards was interesting but it took about 3-3 1/2 hours if you include how early you needed to get there to see and then wait for it to start, watch it, and then fight the tourists to get out of the area.
-Tower of London was great if you got a tour guide. Otherwise you are just walking around old castles without a clue and then it becomes somewhat of a waste of time. (If you want to see something interesting, there is a McDonalds outside of the Tower of London, in a cave-like setting.. very interesting, very american, we got a good laugh)
-If you like to shop, stop at Harrods... what a sight. A store like nothing you have ever seen before. Alot of designer items were alot cheaper then in the states.
-Whatever you buy in London/Paris or elsewhere, you are entitled to get your tax back. So inquire when you make the purchase, it's about another 10% saved.

PARIS
- regardless of what you read elsewhere, go to see the Moulin Rouge. The tickets were about $80 pp and that includes the show and either a bottle of wine or champange. The show was part Cirque de sole and part topless women dancing, but it was very interesting and a great experience while in Paris.
- Bateaux Parisiens Eiffel Tower, dinner cruise was another great experience. It is $125 and cheaper (depending on what kind of tickets you buy). That includes a dinner cruise on the Siene, with a guide to tell you what you are passing, a bottle of water, a bottle of red a bottle of white wine, a cocktail when you board, 5 course dinner, a cheese service, nice dinner music, & a booklet of the sights.
- Another great place to get tickets for the big red bus. (21 euros pp.)
- If you go to Notre Dame, walk about two blocks up along the water and stop at one of the French Bistros and eat at one of the sidewalk tables. Just watching the people walking by and enjoying the Paris atmosphere was a real treat.
- The Arc was a big climb (of stairs) but very interesting and had beautiful views from the top.
- The Eiffel Tower. This had unbelievable lines, but if you go to Paris, you just have to do it. GO TO THE TOP. Alot of people just go up to the second level and turn around. If you are going to wait on line and pay the money, go to the third level... It is incredible. Be prepared to spend half of your day waiting in line, seeing the views and getting back down.
- The Lourve could easily take you a full day to get through (some will say longer). If museums aren't a priority on your trip (they weren't on ours), there is still plenty to see and keep you busy.
I hope you find this helpful.

I am still trying to figure out the math problem about the sandwiches. Can anyone help?
Suzy Jun 26th, 2002 05:06 PM

Yes, he can bring sandwiches IF they're from Pret a Manger (since it has places in NY and lLondon, bt a name that sounds like Paris).

By the way, the Visitors Travelcard costs more than just buying regular tube passes after you get to London. You can buy them at any tube station, a pass is good all day (or all week!) on both tube and buses.

Jennifer, I'm planning a similar trip for next March. Did you like going that time of year? Did you find it considerably cheaper than if you'd gone later? Also, how long were you in London and Paris respectively?
Thanks!

Well done,Jennifer!
My day trip was Oxford.Early morning train, back at dinner time.
I agree about seeing a play, also free concerts are everywhere, try to see one,I know there are concerts at ST Martins in the Fields during the week. Also the St James Church.
Paris-try to go to a flea market or one like the rue Cler, just to get a feeling of living in Paris.
Walk from the D'Orsay to the Invalides, through the neighborhoods,go to the Rodin Museum and sit in the garden.
Have lunch at the Place des Vosges and listen to the children playing in the park, listen for the opera singer who practices with her windows open.
A Bateau Mouche at twilight.
StChappelle anytime, try to see a concert there.
A late night coffee at a cafe such as the Deux Magots.
See Sacre Couer then walk the little back streets of Montmarte.
Walk around Ille St Louis, get an ice cream from Berthillon.
Buy flowers as soon as you get there and put them in your room.
Have a wonderful time~
