Nutella - Don't you have in your supermarket?

We have Nutella in all our supermarkets and I have never been tempted to buy it.
Did any of you know it is a product Poland?
I've always thought it was a French product.
It seems lots of Fodorites arriving in Paris make a bee-line for that crepe stand so they can get their 'Nutella Fix'! (Two bites and I'm done - sorry, I think they spread far too much on the crepe).

Yes, we have it. It's funny - our girls just HAD to have some after our return from Italy. They ate a bit, then haven't touched it since. I'm allergic to tree nuts, so I don't know if it's yummy or not. Does it taste kind of like peanut butter?

Nutella is an italian product
The Ferrero company (producindg Nutella) was established in Alba in 1946
Crepes Nutella seems to be popular among US tourists in Paris indeed (along with the Nutella + bananas version)

Nutella is sold widely in the US.

There are people who think if you eating something IN a paricular locale it always tastes "better."

Rationale for that "fact" here has ranged from "fresher ingredients" (apparently all the ones elsewhere are stale, rotten, or somehwere in between) to thinking that was probably stolen from., and should have remained in, a Garbo or Fellini fantasy---opps, I mean't movie.

What is puzzling is why anyone bothers with "rationale" in the first place; if it tasted better then it tasted better..who cares why? It's when they start INSISTING on it that things get weird.

missypie - I have only ever tried one Nutella crepe this last Paris visit simply because 'everybody' raves about them and YES it definitely tastes nutty because the main ingredient is Hazel nuts & cocoa powder. I might give it another try in a smaller quantity.

Norween - The jar I looked at said; Made in Poland by Ferrero Polska, Warzawa ( Warsaw?) Poland.
The Ferrero name must be the Italian connection and thinking about it, must be the same Ferrro as the chocolates "Ferrero Rocher"?sp?

Ferrero has a production plant in Besk in Poland (and one in Somerset for the USA)
They produce also the rochers indeed

Another well known brand of the Fererro group (at least in Europe) is 'Kinder'

Ferrerro is the european leader of the low in chocolate chocolate products

They even sell that stuff in my US supermarket, and it's pretty crummy in a small neighborhood. It's not remotely fresh, anyway, wherever you buy it. I've never wanted to buy it as it's rather expensive and I don't like those kind of products anyway. I just don't eat junk food like that very much, and rarely even eat peanut butter as I don't like it that much.

Well Christina, the jar dates read 11-10-05 to 11-10-06 which gives it a year on the shelf.
No doubt Woolworths where I saw the Nutella will remove it on the stoke of midnight on the expirey date!

We too can buy it in our supermarket. We have a jar of it at home, as my hubby is dear enough to attempt to recreate the Nutella crepes we've eaten in Paris. I'll be honest though; its much more fun eating it in Europe!

Kids grow up loving Nutella and Maggi Ravioli! It's the standard junk food, just like peanut butter elsewhere

I only crave Nutella when we're in Italy. I pass by it on the shelf at our grocery store here in the US and have no desire to buy it. It seems to be the combination of "Nutella and Italy" that makes it for me. DH thinks it's pretty funny, as he has no desire for it in either place!

Here in Canada you can buy it in every supermarket, and it is next to the peanut butter, and other spreads.
Ano no it does not taste like peanut butter at all!

I personally love it! But I have a serious sweet tooth. When I lived in Asia for a year, I had my parents send it over to me.
It's a nice treat every once in a while, and I certainly don't eat it every morning!
But I will be going to Paris and Italy soon and will certainly indulge in it thre!

I grew up on Nutella, smothered on rolls and bread... Yum. I have to admit though that the Nutella I eat/buy in Europe tastes different than the jars I've tried in the US. My cousin and her kids agree on this as well. The jars in Europe are also packaged in glass jars (plastic in the US).

To stevegenie:

BJs jars are only 750g. I moved to Germany in Jan 2002 just after the Euro bills and coins had been introduced. The local supermarket (Tegut) had the special DM-Euro jar: 1950 g, 4lb5oz. (The DM/EUR rate is 1.95.) Not THAT's industrial size. I even found a photo of a 3000g package (http://www.belenos44.freesurf.fr/Euro/images/Pot2b.jpg).

As to different tastes, I think US Nutella may taste a bit different than German, but if so it's slight. However, a friend from Italy would not eat German Nutella as it was so different than the Italian Nutella she grew up eating.

I read an article recently about Nutella which said that its recipe does vary according to country in an attempt to satisfy different prevailing tastes. It was developed after WWII when chocolate was in short supply and hazelnuts were used to stretch it.

In the US Trader Joe has its own chocolate-hazelnut spread which I like better than the US Nutella.
