Nuremberg and Wittenberg tips?

I am going to the Christmas markets and haven't been to Nuremberg for quite a while and have never been to Wittenberg. Anyone who has been to either place recently who has any tips, I would appreciate them. Have hotels sorted and will not be in Nuremberg on the weekend. Thanks in advance. CJ

Don't miss the largest intact grouping of Third Reich relics in Germany - a few miles south of town - the old lavish parade grounds with the balcony still there that the Fuhrer famously reviewed goose-stepping troops - there is a museum and the long parade ground nicely restored. Well not for everyone but to me an absolute highlight of Nurnberg - besides those famous little weiners served all over town.

I loved Lutherstadt-Wittenberg to - nicely restored and if into Luther lots of places associated with him, including the church where he allegedly nailed demands leadng to the Reformation.

A lovely town.

Sorry don't know nudding about Noel markets there but every one I've been to is fantastic - I love that piping hot spice wine - on a cool day hits the spot.

Thanks, Pal. I've been to the Market in N three times including '89 when the east Germans were there for the 1st time so don't need help there. Looking for a favorite restaurant or shop or ? Can't wait to go to Wittenberg.

Hi Carol - I was in the old DDR several times and went to Lutherstadt-Wittemberg when it was in complete tatters - paint peeling off buildings - roads with potholes everywhere - facades of churches black with dirt - but voila after reunification everything bloomed - when I went back a few years ago it was all different and now a gem!

Where are you bssing? Nurnberg - are you taking the train to say Wittenberg - check www.bahn.de/en - the official German Railways site for schedules and discounted tickets - which however are train-specific and non-changeable non-refundable and are sold in limited numbers so must be booked far in advance. For lots of good stuff on German trains I always spotlight www.seat61.com - great info on discounted tickets); http://www.budgeteuropetravel.com/id9.html and www.ricksteves.com. Within Bavaria you can use the bargain all day pass Lander Card but are restricted to regional trains.

I liked the Goldener Posthorn for a casual meal. Nice atmosphere, mostly locals the two times that we ate there.

It is on St. Sebalder Platz at St. Sebaldus Church. This church was largely destroyed in the war. It is an ongoing exhibit about why and how it is being rebuilt. That might turn some folks away but I like visiting it. The idea of the community's determination to bring their church back is inspiring for me.

Regards, Gary

Seconding Gary_Mc's suggestion of the Goldenes Posthorn, and also Bratwursthäusle which is just nearby to Goldenes Posthorn - lots of Nürnberger Bratwurst goodness to be had in a small radius!

Thanks, Gary and madam - that's the kind of info I'm looking for. Have been to the Bratwursthausle and will be sure to try the G Posthorn.
Thanks, Pal, my transportation is sorted. I've been riding the trains for a long time. CJ
