Number of days in Sorrento/ Rome?

I am going to Italy in May for my first anniversary.
Can you tell me how many days you think I will need in Sorrento and Rome

I am currently thinking
3 nights in Florence to
2 nights in Sorrento to
3 nights in Rome

Is 2 nights in Sorrento enough? I know I will have to waste a bunch of time traveling from Florence to Sorrento. Do I need 3 nights in Rome? This is my first time so I want to hit the main tourist highlights of each city. So it's either 2 nights in Sorrento and 3 in Rome or vice versa.

With that much time in Sorrento, should I spent it in Sorrento or making daytrips to Capri and Positano? Any other recommendations?

Thanks

3 nights = 2 days
2 nights = 1 day

Will you arrive in Florence jet-lagged?

IMO, Sorrento is too far and offers too much to see for such a brief stay... even if you gave Sorrento 3 nights (and thereby made Rome merely an afterthought)

How about 3 nights Florence, 2 nights Siena or Orvieto, and 3 nights Rome?

Sorrento deserves 3/4 nights at least, Amalfi Coast, Capri, Ischia, Pompei, Herculaneum, too much to see. I would skip it as traveling from Florence is already far enough. I would concentrate around Rome, Florence, Tuscany coast instead.

Hi spin, if it was my trip with a total of eight nights in Italy I would spend at least 3 nights in Florence and the balance in Rome. Are you flying into Florence and departing from Rome?

Well this is what I have so far:
Fly in to Paris May 7th morning - check out May 10th morning (3 nights)
Fly to Venice May 10th morning - check out May 11th morning (1 night)
Train to Florence May 11th morning - check out May 14th morning (3 nights)

then was thinking..
Train to Sorrento May 14th morning - check out May 16th morning (2 nights)
Train to Rome May 16th morning - check out May 19th morning (3 nights)
Fly back to US out of Rome

If you guys think that 2 days/nights isn't enough in Sorrento and is too out of the way, what other city would be good to visit between/around Florence and Rome ?

You absolutely do not have time for Sorrento if you want to see anything much of the Coast, or to add any other city. It is a real shame to fly from Paris to Venice one morning, only to check out the next morning. With time for flight from Paris and getting to your hotel, etc. you will have barely an afternoon and night in Venice.

Rather than trying to squeeze in Sorrento, here are some choices in the order that I think makes most sense:

1. Add both of the days to Venice.

2. Add one day to Venice and one to Rome.

3. Add one day to Paris and one to Venice.

4. If Sorrento is really important to you, exchange Venice or Paris for Sorrento, but either way, add at least a day to Venice.

There are other ways you could allocate that one extra day (after giving at least one full day to Venice) - depending on your interests. For example, you could add the day to Florence and do a day trip to Siena.

Any of these would still be rushed, but doable.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will take out Sorrento from my itinerary. I will add another night in Venice and am debating between another night in Florence or Rome?
With the extra night in either city, I want to take a day trip to a nearby beach.

I saw that Florence is near Viareggio and Ostia Lido is near Rome. Are there other better ones? Which city has the better beaches near by? Florence or Rome?
