Now to Madrid
 

My friend has basically decided she now wants to live in Madrid for a year instead of Barcelona. She wants to live in a residential area, near a metro stop with easy food shopping. Salamanca is too expensive so we looked at a map and there is Chueca, the area south of Retiro, and renovated area near the Manzanares. Damon mentioned the area east of Retiro, which she will explore, but which none of us are familiar with. Her needs are an elevator and A/C.

Is there any other area she should consider?

(I am certainly glad we did not make any airline reservations. It seems you take Ryan or another cheap-o carrier to Paris for about 60 bucks each way. I will see what other places we can visit for a short flight and low fares.)

She can check out the Malasaña district, which is just north of Chueca. And there is the Moncloa district in the north, near the public university Complutense.

$60 is actually expensive for Ryanair if you book a little in advance. Madrid and Barcelona are fairly cheap for flights. You can also take the trains with in Spain.

I like the Chamberi district very much. Just a few metro stops from the heart of the city, nevertheless a slower pace here and nice local atmosphere shops, daytime cafes, terraces and tapas bars.
