Novice traveler needs help getting the most out of 6 weeks in Italy

I am studying in Italy for 6 weeks may 24-july 6 and would like to see as much as europe as possible. I have looked at train prices and have been advised to avoid them and maybe even consider flying. I don't know if it is reasonable to be able to go to paris from rome, or munich, or amsterdam, or vienna. i will be taking classes on weekdays but can travel on the weekends and i want to span out as far as possible without spending most of my time on a train instead of seeing things. any suggestions? also anyone know good dance clubs for college age kids in italy?

like a secret society.

I know a cool guy in Orvinio, in the province of Rieti. A jeweler. Wildlife conservationist. Film maker.

This is in the middle of nowhere. but only 45 minutes from Rome.

Go visit him.

See the real Italy. not just tourist Italy.

I could give you more info - - but it will be more fun if you approach it as a scavenger hunt.

G'night.

Go to Sicily. Sardegna.

You're going to be learning Italian, right? See Italian stuff.

Oh, and one more cool thing.

Once a thread gets past 3 or 4 posts it can take on a life of its own. Post tangential questions. Let the subject wander.

I have been to italy before, i saw venice, florence, and trent. i do want to see sicily, capri, naples, milan, obviously rome, but a lot of that i will do with the class during the week. i just wanted to see how far of a scope i can reasonably cover without spending most of my time traveling instead of seeing things. Is it reasonable to think maybe i can leave friday after noon to see paris and come back sunday night so i dont miss class. or is that insane. any hints are welcome. i do agree that i am not gonna be a tourist, i am going to try to fit in as fast as possible and be more like a local

I live in Milan and go away very often. I just spent the weekend in Paris and the one before that in St Moritz. Paris is one hour by plane and St moritz 1 and a half by car. Everything is possible in a weekend in Europe. It's very small compared to the states, and everything is close. If you want good air prices check out www.lastminute.it
They have adavance purchase also. Have fun!

I forgot to tell you that Amsterdam is an hour and a half by plane. London about 2, but you arrive an hour in advance because of the time change, so that is in your benefit when you leave, but not when you return. Okay? Hope this helps.

To Kevin:

It is not TOO rude to simply start a new post "Melissa from Milan - - would you mind contacting me by e-mail?" - - better chances of reaching her.

Kevin,

I don't think you are going to get much more useful from more topping. Are you also trying www.lonelyplanet.com (Thorntree)?
