The Leopard by Giuseppe-di-Lampedusa:
Is about the last Italian King and his final days in the heat of southern Italy, its a beautiful book that describes both the countryside and politics in a inspiring way.

Apparently it was voted best italian book of last century, but I feel the jury is out.
