Novels set in Portugal

Hi, wondering if anyone can help with this unusual request. A friend is going to Portugal and doesn't fancy reading a straight history book but loves novels set in different places. I'd love recommendations about any novels (in English) set in Portugal.

try out The Last Kabbalist of Lisbon by Richard Zimmler - good book too.

Look for www.amazon.com and then "The Maias".

This is one of the classics of Portuguese literature about Lisbon's life. Don't forget however that this was written 200 years ago. Don't expect nowadays Portuguese to act as in the book.

"Baltasar and Blimunda" by Nobel Prize Winner Jose Saramago

Thanks to everyone for the titles of novels - have passed them on to my friend and she was thrilled. I'm always appreciative of the time some people take to help others. Thank you.
