Nottingham, England
 

Hello! Unfortunately, there is no mention of this city in Fodor's Great Britain 2000. I'm attending an international conference there, hosted by La Leche League Europe, August 4-7. Nottingham is remembered for the antics of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest is located there as well. Has anyone been there? Can you steer me to B & Bs that are non-smoking? I've booked myself into a hotel recommended by the conference planners but would prefer to get away from it all!!! <BR>Thank you.

I found a site that may be useful to you.it is uk-expo.com This site is dedicated to B&B's in UK.There are opinions about places where guests have stayed and the site will assist you to find the accommodation you are looking for. Also you could try "thisisbritain" which is pretty comprehensive.

I hate to break it to you, Susan, but there is a reason why Nottingham does not get listed in tour guides. <BR> <BR>I went once for a conference and it was not the worst place I've been. It's famous for its lace. And if you like detective novels, read some of John harvey's work about Charlie Resnick. <BR> <BR>Otherwise, I can't think of much to say.

To be fair to Nottingham, both the Let's Go Guide to Britain and the Lonely Planet Guide think Nottingham is worth 3 or 4 pages of guide space. It is the location of Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, one of the numerous oldest pubs in England, but the one probably with the most credentials. D.H. Lawrence was born nearby and there are museums.

Susan, we visited Nottingham and Sherwood Forest some years ago when traveling with young children... town wasn't so hot, but we didn't really give it a chance and I'm sure you can find lots of atmosphere if you spend a little time there. However, the kids loved Sherwood Forest and I have to say that even adults found some of it interesting, esp. the Major Oak, which purports to be where some of the merry band actually lived (the tree is that big - and hollow inside).
