Not so Eastern Europe

How long will it take Fodor's and other travel companies to realize that countries like the Czech Republic and Slovenia are not Eastern Europe. They are west of Vienna and should be considered Central Europe.

Geographically, you are right.
Politically, these were part of the Soviet Bloc.

Maria_H May 6th, 2008 10:59 AM

Yes, it's much more to do with history and politics than geography. The Czech Republic (my fahers place of birth) will always be Eastern Europe to me.

So is Berlin in eastern Europe?

StCirq May 6th, 2008 11:07 AM

I'm sure they realize it, but given that probably 99% of their readerships consider these to be in Eastern Europe it might make it just a bit harder to sell books.

agree with WillTravel and Maria H.

"How long will it take Fodor's and other travel companies to realize that countries like the Czech Republic and Slovenia are not Eastern Europe." - at least 40 years. It will take a whole generation to get communism out of their minds.

The Soviet Bloc is gone. Granted those countries were behind an iron curtain for 40 years - but that's 40 years out of 2,000 years of history. They're Central - the Russian incident notwithstanding.
