Norway trip itinerary
 

My husband and I are considering a trip of abt 2 weeks to Bergen and Trondheim,
SAS round trip to Copenhagen in May. We are 65 yrs old and do not hike. I would appreciate opinions and suggestions, especially from those who live in these places. We would like to travel by train without returning the same route so I am thinking we can take the train through Oslo and take the Myrdal/Flåm route to Bergen and then fly to Trondheim . We would like to keep expenses down where possible although we know Norway is very expensive. Spending extra time in Oslo is optional. My grandparents lived on a farm in Melhus, Flå/Ler area near Trondheim in 1873-1892. I am into genealogy and am hoping to find someone with like interests and maybe help me find the church and farm. The other family farm was in Stryn before 1873. The info I found about the route from Trondheim to Stryn takes abt 6 hrs. Perhaps there is a tour bus since I know there is a ski resort there. Renting a car is probably necessary but we feel a bit nervous about driving the roads. There are distant cousins that still live in the Melhus and Stryn areas. I am trying to find them but no luck so far.
We could travel by train from Trondheim back to Copenhagen and fly home (Portland, OR) but I do not know how long that might take. We want to see the scenery so do not want to travel at night.

Since you will be flying SAS, I would make use of their Air Pass offer and take a direct flight from Copenhagen to Bergen for 80 euro. If you want to do the Nutshell trip it is just as enjoyable as a one-day roundtrip from Bergen, and it saves you from dragging the luggage with you throughout the journey.

Stryn is halfway between Bergen and Trondheim. Theres a coach going this route:

I would probably drive myself, and it is actually not that difficult. You could stop wherever you want and explore the local districts of Stryn and continue to Melhus. One-way car-rental can be expensive however.

Trondheim to Copenhagen would be a long train ride, although maybe there are fast trains that could speed it up. Perhaps you can find out how long a ride at the site www.dsb.dk.

Thank you all for the replies. The information is most helpful.With the low cost of the SAS air passes it would appear it best to fly between Copenhagen and Oslo and Oslo to Trondheim at least, then back to Copenhagen for return to America. Does this sound practical? We could then take the train to for the rest of our journeys. All the information we can get is greatly appreciated.

There's an overnight ferry (actually at least two different ship lines) between Copenhagen and Oslo. That might work for part of your trip. I think it runs during the day also, but obviously that would take up a lot of time.

The trip from Bergen to Trondheim can also be taken on the Hurtigruten ferry/cruise ship. I've heard many say that trip was a highlight of their travels in Norway. I would at least take a look at their homepage: http://www.hurtigruten.com/index.asp

Thank you for the valuable information regarding contacts in the Melhus and Flå areas. I have just returned from a week away from home and trying to catch up. Upon our arrival in Trondheim is there a place where I can meet anyone with similar genealogy interests? I am really excited about a trip to Norway.
