Norway Question

Hello all, been browsing the forum for a few months. I am looking for advice on travel in Europe. Leaving in mid/late Sept. and staying for three weeks, will be in Italy the last week. My first question is about Norway. I want to visit there for about 5 days maybe 6. I am flying in to Oslo, and plan on checking out the statue park and probably a few museums, stay there one maybe 2 nights.

I really want to take the train from Oslo to Bergen. I also want to visit Kjerag. My question is this: Is it possible to see the Northern Lights in late Sept. in or around Tromso? According to Nordlys it is, but other sources on the web make it seem like it isn't going to be worth going that far north. If it is possible, what is the best (cheapest) way to get to Tromso? Fly? from Bergen? Oslo?

Any advice will be appreciated.

This doesn't answer your question but it may be helpful information (and it brings your question to the top again). Norway is the most expensive country I've ever traveled in. A McDonald's quarter-pounder -- no fries or drink -- costs $12 equivalent, and everything else is equally expensive. Bring lots of money or plan to eat from grocery delis, still expensive by our standards. Having said that, visiting Norway is worth every NOK.

Thanks for the responses. I've already been warned about how expensive it is. I will be staying with a friend in Oslo, so that will save a bit of money, other than that, I have no problem with eating from grocery delis or whatever.

There is no guarantee you will see the Northern lights - it all depends on strong the geomagnetic activity is whether or not they occur. Have a look at http://tinyurl.com/2zjy86 for advice and forecasts.

Hi

I kinda doubt that you will see northern lights that early in the season but you never know. It all depends on the solar activity.

Have you see my Kjerag trip report: http://gardkarlsen.com/kjerag.htm . Hope that you get nice weather while you are here in the area so you can enjoy the view :d
